Fat Hateration

Racism, homophobia, and now sizeism?

From race to sexuality, discrimination is unfortunately prevalent in society. Times might be a-changing, and with change comes progress, but with every two steps forward, it can be sometimes be one step back. Weight seems to be the last accepted form of discrimination -- and these guests are sharing their very real opinions of people... all based on size.

You Tell Us: Does a person's size matter?

Hi Tyra how are u doing? My name is Mona Ahemd I am from somali. I'm slam and i love to watch your show everday so nice to meet you Tyra.

I've been over weight all my life I've been teased for it sense day 1 it hurts yes but what I do is I hang things on my wall that say even being big I am beautiful such things as posters did it for me I had 1 poster with Tyra Monique and a beautiful lady with just 1 showing she was beautiful I'm only 15 and I am at least 230 pounds sometimes I feel like a cow but I have 2 look in the mirror and say i am beautiful no matter what even thow i used to think offering my body to boys would make me feel loved more but it didn't so to every 1 who is like me keep your head up and make the right decision

I had a baby about 6 months ago. I am not as skinny as I used to be and it is really depressing. My husband can not stop telling me how beautiful I am, and that should be enough. I want my body back, but I am not sure why. It's never enough...

This is really becoming a "mean girls" issue here. It's clear that body image really gets under the skin of so many women. It is discrimination but it seems to exist most strongly through our own insecurities, the heavier women thinking the less heavy don't understand and the less heavy thinking the heavier girls don't respect the problems they face too. The thing is that so many of us spend so much time thinking about how we look that we barely care about what other women look like unless someone wants our opinion or we are jealous of them. We need to give eachother a break, none of us has had it easy I bet. And as for the guys- guys like girls who are happy, fun, and confident, its true-not just a cheesy saying. So maybe we encourage and respect eachother and we'll all be fighting off hoards of lovely men.

hello. well i'm a single an. i'm into big ladies. but i can't find one to be with. i see a lot of them, and they all looks so ghood. and the ones u had on ur show r so hott. i like to meet them. well that's all bye 4 now...

This is truly upsetting. I am a big person as well, almost as big as the weight Tyra had on, and have to go through all of the same things that happened to Tyra when she was undercover, on a daily basis. What that woman says is truly offensive and upsetting. Just because we don't look like HER, we are then considered on a lower pedestal?! Please, people, be smarter than this ignorant person, and treat EVERYONE, no matter WHAT their size may be, with equal RESPECT as you would to any other. Besides, it's people like THAT who make people like me in the first place, and they're only making things ten times worse.

This was so stupid. Just because a guy isn't attracted to overweight women doesn't mean he's prejudiced against them. Are gay guys prejudiced against women because they're not sexually attracted to them? Of course not. Having a personal taste or type isn't an example of prejudice. There are plenty of straight guys looking for overweight women, by the way. Some of them aren't even sexually attracted to women of other sizes. Does that mean they're prejudiced against those women?

Tyra doesn't look horrible. Tyra looks beautiful, though she also looked beautiful before she lost the "extra" weight. I agree with Diane to a certain extent. I also believe she's very hypocritical. I don't believe Tyra has room to speak upon the issue of weight, eating disordrs, etc., unless she's willing to confront her own issues. What type of message does she believe she's putting out by losing possibly unneccessary weight? What I got from it is that no one can be happy with a little extra weight. We all have to be stick thin. That's not cool. There are a lot of youngs girls, or females in general that look up to Tyra. So, of course, many of them are going to want to follow the actions she takes. I'm totally not anti-Tyra, or anything. I actually like her. I just think some topics should be really thought out before they are addressed.

Just because you're small does not mean you can walk into a store and find something that fits or that people don't look at you. Some girls are small from health issues or fast metabolisms and have to wear kid clothes in their late teens. All women have their insecurities and nothing will fit every one the same. Whether you're a size 00 or 26... we all have our difficulties we deal with and we have to love ourselves and each other.

hey tyra my name is megan and im 15 years old , Im glad that at least one person in this world can see overweight people beautiful like you tyra, being a girl who REALLY hates her body even after going from 143-118 pounds, i know how they feel, though ive lost a lot of weight it doesnt matter to me anymore because now i want nothing more that to get rid of the rest of the fat that ive even gone to the point of becoming bulimic. Your question was "does a persons weight matter?", today in this world it does, when people look at you the look at your weight and think you are a slob, to be honest i wish i never lost the weight because now im not at all happy, im so scared to gain weight.

You know I am so glad that someone brings these things up. My sister is over-weight and has been since we are kids. Yes we all know kids are mean, but it has been so hard for her as an adult too. I mean she has been afraid of walking, or riding a bike anywhere for fear that someone else is going to throw their food and drink out the window at her. I am so sick of the stigma around it Yes she is big, and Yes she is beautiful!!! I am glad you are speaking up about this and so many other things Tyra you rock!

I think the title of this discussion is very interesting. People who want to discriminate will always find something to be discriminatory about. I think the key to self confidence and happiness is learning to disregard negative comments, because no matter how you look you will receive them. Just look at this thread and how someone said that Tyra looks anorexic thin. She looks healthy, yet that person felt the need to make a needlessly rude comment. I think people should be optimistic about their size; once again refering to the title of this thread people can discriminate for so many reasons but at least our size is something that we have the ability to control!

I'd first of all like to respond to the comment posted by the twelve year old girl. "must say we over wheight people have something skinny ppl don't ... we can tell who our real friends are." Oh sweetie you're so young. I feel like you are trying to find something that thinner people are lacking to compensate for your weight issue. Maybe it is true, some girls want to befriend others because they are thin. Maybe they think they'll get more attention? I can't really speak on that. Albeit, I do know that we all eventually find out who our true friends are in times of peril, when you need that person most. I consider girls who I hang out with acquaintances until we've gone through a real-life issue together and they've pulled through for me. I must admit that I've never really had a weight issue, maybe five pounds here or there. I've been active in sports all my life. Working out is second nature to me. I must say that feel especially bad for all these young girls getting teased about their weight. I know so many of them have never had a positive health role model. I don't blame them for the foods they eat and their inactivity. You do what you know. These girls will only succeed if they learn to educate themselves about health or if they're lucky enough to have some inspiration and guidance walk into their lives. Good luck girls, I'm rooting for you. Just remember to take it one urge at a time, please find an alternative to all sodas (that stuff is detrimental), and walk, run or bike everywhere possible. We can't forget about the simplicity yet effectiveness of walking in this modern world. Fight the urge to drive or

hi tyra how you doin i'm only 12 years old my b-day is tomarow (nov 4) and im turnig 13 i know i should be excited but i'm not. I'v been over wheight all my life and it hurts to know that i'm going to be for another year althought i must say we over wheight people have some thing skinny ppl don't ... we can tell who our real friends are . love the show byebye

God, most people have a weight issue on being overweight and food dieting. I HAVE TO EAT IN ORDER TO SURVIVE!!! I am 22 and 110 lbs right now. Thank God for what weight I did gain. I was between 90-100 lbs. If I don't eat I lose weight, AND FAST. YES, I have to have those fatty foods like candy, and food at fast food joints like McDonalds. I can eat so much food, and not gain 1 pound. I can eat breakfast, lunch and dinner at McDonalds for 1 week and not gain even 2 pounds. So no, it's not fun being like me. I AM NOT ANEREXIC! And I have no health problems. No diabetes, nothing! I guess I just have a fast metabolism...and it sucks :(
