Is gay the new black?

Gay marriage and adoption are hot button issues that cause great debates all across the country.

We've come a long was with acceptance in this country, and broke down a longstanding racial barrier when Barack Obama was elected president.

But despite our progress, does society still discriminate against the LGBT community?

Take our poll and tell us if you think the LGBT community is discriminated against and if they should be allowed to get married and adopt children.

NEXT: Gay is the New Black

I weep for those of you who honestly believe that the members of the gay community should not be able to get married or have the joy of adoption. I cry when i think about all of the hate that the christian community has pushed on to the rest of the world... You should be ashamed of yourselves! I'm still in high school and i know right from wrong, unlike you.

I find it horrible that Americans are depriving other Americans of rights, wants, and needs just because they are different. There are us. What happened if heterosexuals were the minority? We would be in their shoes wanting the same thing BUT because of the norms ignorance and some cults we wouldn't get this right. Marriage isn't the only rights that they don't have niether. For instance, it's legal to fire a person because of thier sexual orientation. Horrible? Yes. Unethical? Yes. I like that people are say that "Gay is the new 'colored'" because just as the colored community were being deprived of living the American dream the homosexual community is in that place now. I for one am shocked. Oh and is this the same God that said that eating shrimp is a BIG sin? And wearing multi threaded clothing? And having prisoners marry? And planting different veggies in one farm? Read the Bible, take a government class, take a psychology class, and a sociology class. Education is gold. Rise above the media and the crowd. Be a true American.

If you don't want to compare gay to black, then there are plenty of other things. If a couple goes to college, do they get more rights than people who choose to not go to college? Or teens who have babies, do you take their children away? Just because they aren't "old enough" to have children? How about If we just decide that only rich people can have babies, because they can support them. And the whole marriage issue. Not everyone is the same religion, or even have a religion. So it's completely RIDICULOUS to even bring up religion, or the bible, in such a diverse and wonderful country as this one. Our history is so full of hate that has been overcome to make it a better place. yes the African-American issues. When the Irish were discriminated against, women voting, Japanese during ww2. The poor not being able to vote. Or when not everyone was not aloud to have an education because they were too poor. The list goes on and on. We need to accept people for who they are, and let them marry if they want. Liberty and justice for ALL.

hahahaha HA !

FREEDOM....FREEDOM OF RELIGION....DON'T PUSH YOUR ANTI-EVERYTHING ON ME....IN MY FREEDOM YOU CAN MARRY THE ONE YOU LOVE.....I SAY AGAIN FREEDOM....I WANT IT FOR EVERYONE, AND THAT IS E.V.E.R.Y.O.N.E

I absolutely believe that they should be allowed to get married, who even made it a law saying that they couldn't. Society is all about social construction, we are letting narrow minded idiots that live in the stone age run us. And why not let them adopt, what's more important a child having same sex parents that love them dearly and provide for them just as a heterosexual couple would, or is it more important that these children get written off and left to struggle in the system without anyone to show them love and affection. Besides it's not the like "the gay" is going to rub off on these kids, if anyone knew what they were talking about they would know that being gay is hereditary not a choice (for some it may be) but if you were born straight why would you choose to go the other way unless something traumatic happened to you. People need to be more open minded and find out what's really important besides trying to control what homosexuals do, if we keep going this route it will continue to oppress women and people of color and different ethnicities. GROW UP AND THINK UP AMERICA!!!!!

here's the thing, you wanna bring christianity and the bible in this, don't reason 1. theres a separation of church and state and getting married is under the gov't 2. not everyone is the same religion, some are athiests, and they still get married without the incorporation of the bible. Now heres some stats for you, "Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning youth are up to four times more likely to attempt suicide than their heterosexual peers, according to the Massachusetts 2006 Youth Risk Survey. A 2007 San Francisco State University Chavez Center Institute study shows that lgbt and questioning youth who come from a rejecting family are up to nine times more likely to attempt suicide than their heterosexual peers. And for every completed suicide by a young person, it is estimated that 100 to 200 attempts are made (2003 Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance Survey). (by Ramon Johnson, Ask.com,Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender and Questioning Youth Suicide Statistics)" Now all I have to say is LOVE THY NEIGHBOR AS THY SELF AND LET GOD BE THE JUDGE. STOP HATIN!

I'm seeing many comments about how capable same sex couples are wen it comes to providing for children, but it has nothing to do with that 'becca' said that being gay is not a sin... but it is! I'm not saying straight people are all excellent egs of how well should live life but it's about bringing children into a world where such confusion should not exist.

OMG!!!!! I am 1) a CHRISTIAN and 2) a human being. And I need for people who believe in same sex marriages and relationships to explain to me why and how such thoughts can be justified. In the Bible it is said that God made 'man and woman' not 'man and man' nor 'woman and woman' so why is it that we try so desperately to go against the work and will of God. Let me assure you that I'm no bigot, but i strongly believe in my faith and by extensions my values from which these have been born into existence. so what I need to know is why are people willing to place innocent children into such homes of confusion that are not of GOD! I love gay people lesbians and so on you name it but I strongly believe that by placing kids in such homes would unleash a new generation of individuals all of them confused; hence going against the will of God. I know that there are such couples that would make better parents than 'straight' couples but we owe it the future (children) to have God-fearing individuals and I think to be raised in such a home presents options for them that should have never been made available in the first place... why confuse our kids and make it more difficult to understand life as it is? WHY?

Tyra, THIS IS INSULTING. BLACK IS A COLOR. GAY IS A RELATIONSHIP ORIENTATION. GAY PEOPLE WERE NEVER SLAVES, BEATEN, KILLED, CHASED BY DOGS, FORCED TO LIVE, EAT AND GO TO SCHOOL SEPARATELY FROM OTHERS, TREATED AS 1/5 OF A HUMAN BEING. YOU CAN'T FORCE ALL BLACK PEOPLE TO CONFRONT THE GOVERNMENT FOR GAY RIGHTS BECAUSE THEY USED TO BE SLAVES. STOP BEING IGNORANT, AND PROPAGATING THIS SLANDER. THIS IS A REAL MESS! YOU BETTER CHECK YOUR HISTORY BECAUSE YOU SAY STUPID THINGS LIKE THIS.

I dont understand where the gov. comes in and decided who we can and can not marry.I know that they hav been doing it for years but Y??? Ppl should be able to make their own choices. They say we have freedom of speech ok they why can't we say "Hey I love this person even though we are the same sex?!" can anyone answer that???

I'm not even sure where to begin. Being a lesbian I know firsthand what it's like to be disciminated against for this. And not simply by strangers, but by my own family as well. And for me, that hurts more then anything a stranger could do or say. I love my family, even if they don't like that part of me. But I wish people could just understand. That's who I am. I believe that this issue with marriage and adoption hits me personally. And I think that ever man and woman deserves that right. Just like a straight woman, I too wish to get married on day. To have children. And I would love nothing more then to adopt a child. Unfortunately, I fear that this may never happen and that breaks my heart. I don't think that anyone should be allowed to take something like that from a person.

Dear Tiff, I am bisexual. It is a choice for me with whom I have a relationship with, but I have always had sexual feelings towards other women for as long as I have had those feelings for men. I can NOT CHOOSE to have those feelings! That hurts me to think that if we ever met, you would hate that part of me, despite of who I am as a person. Dear Rapheal, As a sexual abuse victim, and a local Battered Women's Shelter volunteer, I have experienced, as well as researched about sexual assault and abuse, MOST PEDOPHILES ARE MEN WHO LIKE LITTLE GIRLS!!!! NOT HOMOSEXUALS!!

This should not be about 'gay'/'straight'. This should be about the right for one person to commit to another, show their love between those two people, and have it recognized! You may say this will jeopardize the sanctity of marriage, but please take a look at divorce rates in this country first. If you truly feel strongly about this, and think that your opinion is important, please do not just complain about things on internet blogs and polls, get involved, write congress, help in your community, no matter what your side on the issue!

I agree with Raphael. Gay is a choice right? We shouldn't 'discriminate' gay people. Well lets leave the bible out of this and move into some real world facts like younger boys and girls consenting to sex and a relationship with an adult. What's the problem there, we shouldn't 'discriminate' anybody right? Wrong! Why? Because its wrong! And so is gay. And for gays to adopt? What an outrage! Children don't get adopted by people with mental problems how are gay people getting away with it? This just goes to show what America has turned into. And bc we did not want to 'discriminate' instead of going by merit and experience we now have a president who has put us more in debt than any other president in the U.S. I am so ashamed to call myself an American.
