NEXT: Child Beauty Pageants: Do or Don't?

I think pageants can be a great experience as long as they are kept in the proper perspective. We work very hard at staying balanced and focusing on what is REALLY important--believe me, it's not the crown. Pageants are just a fun hobby! My daughter loved seeing the girls on the show and now she wants to be on it, too!

I think beauty pageants as a whole are an outdated past time and should really be dropped now that we're in a more culturally advanced age. We're pretty much looking at a polished up showcase that focuses so much on looks which is a bad message to young girls. Sure there'll be a few questions when dealing with their personality but come on now: This is just an excuse for stage mothers and fathers to live their own dreams at the expense of their children. Let the kids be kids. Don't get them into thinking that they should live their life according to how you wanted to live yours. The glamorizations and competitiveness for beauty pageants are not something I really approve of and, if I had a child, wouldn't encourage them to do it. There should be more focus on developing the brain which is echoed when that little girl said she'd rather be pretty than smart which was very sad but at least Tyra gave her a better answer to work with aside from being a role model herself.

i totally disagree with the women on here well most of them... i dont think age should define what a person can or cannot do.. IM SURE WHEN WE WERE 5 WE WOULD HAVE LOVED TOO DO SO.. i think that every little girl would love that time on stage being beautiful but as far as the 5 year olds cursing or being rude to there parents in any way i dont think that has anything too do with the pageants i think thats just the way they were brought up and you dont blame the PAGEANTS and the MAKEUP for that u blame the PARENTS.. so for all the PARENTS THAT FEEL BAD FOR PUTTING THERE KIDS IN PAGEANTS DONT FEEL BAD. YOU GUYS ARE JUST BEING GOOD MOTHERS.. -CHELSEA

How can this parents think or feel that this is ok? Do they have a real look at this girls or boys? If a teen would show up like that am sure of the bitchy comments - but its ok for a 3 yrs old to look like a grown up in miniature? I have 3 kids , my daughter danced balet, played basketball and did everything what children should do, so did my sons, my daughter is a real beautiful young woman now, still as beutiful as Liz Tylor was - the same amazing eyes. I live in Sweden, there is no such think as pageants here. To be pretty is not what makes life worthwhile - to be "fierce" as Tyra says - thats what is ia all about. What do this parents think or believe this children learn from this pageants?

Hi, I live in sweden and i just saw your show. This is so sick, we dont have those Pageants here. I dont think its good for young girls to do it, its only the parents who is trying to live their drems trough their kids! Sorry for bad english =) Love your show!

What is the matter with these parents that they think this is ok? The pagent coordinator (or whoever she was) said to the effect of "if you're watching these girls and thinking sexual thoughts you're the one with the problem." so if i let my son watch non stop slasher movies starting at age 2 and he goes on a killing spree when he's 11 does that mean i can breathe easy that its not my fault? Maybe i can just blame the whole bloody mess on society. When you parade your babies in front of a world full of pedophiles it's like handing out a menue to a bunch of hungry wolves. They are being taught to behave like a prime cut of meat. Good for you!

I think beauty pagents for children are discusting and exploitive. Those parents are selfish in trying to live out their lives through their innocent children. What sort of values are they teaching these little girls? That looks are more important than how they feel about themselves. My heart went out especially for the little 2 year old who can't even be a toddler. Seeing her father cry because she didn't win the pagent proves he's in it for himself. He needs to be a dad and do what's best for her not for what he wants! These children are being set up for a life of dissappointments. There will always be someone prettier than them. These little ones should be spending their time doing what little girls do - acting their own age and playing with dolls.

I viewed the 'toddlers and tiaras' show and I felt that tyra's input was quite flippant and shallow. Tyra's attempt to torque and manipulate her argument proved that she is fighting a losing battle. She seems to put a lot of effort in exaggerating responses. For example, the little girl that came on with her dad was probably crying because of her over enthusiastic mocking of one of the pageant girls’ parent. The fact is kids will generally not participate in any extracurricular activity without a parent introducing it. If my parents did not introduce, or even sometimes force, me into trying new things I wouldn't be able to swim, play baseball, soccer, practice karate, play the guitar and piano and eventually attend college. We need parents to introduce things; it’s their job to make us socially capable and to have us understand that we should do things that will eventually lead to happiness, which is what maturity is, in its true sense.

Child pageants have some serious ramifications for the children entering and also for those who don't. As a result, some participants grow up selfish, entitled, and misguided as to what real beauty is. They are being groomed at such a young age that beauty is on the outside and the person inside takes a back seat. Although competition can be healthy, when done in such an arena, it can create monsters! As for the mothers who succumb their children to such abuse- and yes I think it is, both mental and physical; mental/emotional when they lose, perhaps thinking they are not beautiful and physical where they have to undergo uncomfortable activities, such as tanning, to get ready - I think just showcase their insecurities about themselves. They are trying to live vicariously through their children, hoping to accomplish something they perhaps could not. No doubt most of these mothers (and fathers!) are overweight and not very attractive according to the standard of beauty we portray. It's really sad. But I think these girls, babies, are being exploited, abused, and used by their parents.

Hi my name is genesis and I have a comment on today's show. the girl in the orange said that she would like to be pretty than to be smart. her mother said that she is a straight a student i don't think that her daughter is a straight a student. because if she was a straight a student and so smart she would have said that she is smart and pretty, not just say pretty.so that is my commet how are you doin, by the way I love your show.

I think the pagents are good for the girls' self esteem,i know if i was that age again and my mother put me in a pagent i would be happy. it's something for the kids to do and it's something to look back on and say "look at me i was in pagents. The pushy moms on your show, those are the ones that do not agree with. If the child wants to continue in doing the pagents i don't think anyone should judge the parents. me you or anyone else.
