It's nasty.

It's just not natural.

It's against God's word.

These were just a few of the sentiments expressed on the Tyra Banks show dealing with prejudice and homosexuality last week. Also in the last few weeks, Vermont and Maine joined eight other states in allowing same sex partners to officially marry under state law. Even the District of Columbia voted to recognize legal gay marriages and is expected to pass its own gay marriage legislation in the near future. In fact, I believe in the next 20 years we could see as many as 30-35 states have some legal way to recognize same sex partnerships.

They're here, they're queer, get used to it.

I know why the hate exists. It's no secret. Most folks will tell you exactly how and why they feel the way they do. But what I can never grasp is why anyone would give-a-sh** who anyone, gay or straight, is sleeping with. It's okay to have beliefs. It's okay not to "approve" of a person's conduct or behavior. It is ABSOLUTELY NOT okay to discriminate or to treat someone disrespectfully because of his or her sexual preference.

If every gay person in the world vanished tomorrow, how would your life be better? Would our school system improve, would crime decrease, would poverty disappear, would you have more sex? How exactly does the activity of two consenting people in their bedroom impact you -- at ALL?? I have posed this question to my audience many times, and frankly I have been shocked by the less-than-veiled-animosity on the phone lines. And even some of the posts on this very site, including this misguided gem:

"I think it is ridiculous that people especially women stand up and defend gay people...the lady on this show was absolutely correct when she said that they can't compare themselves to black people being discriminated...we are born black and that's something we can't change, whereas they choose the lifestyle that they are living and that's definitely something that they can change... I am absolutely disgusted by those people who condone homosexuality and the almighty god who has all power will judge them accordingly."

Really?! WTF?!

I have had gay people tell me they chose their lifestyles and others tell me they were born that way. I have had straight folks say that it's a sin and an abomination to God and that it's not a natural act. But none of those views matter. Born gay or not, if it's against whatever holy book you have faith in or not, if it fights the rules of nature or not - - it's all irrelevant. All that matters is that as human beings we are born with free will. As long as I'm not out to hurt people in some form or fashion, I can live the life that's best for me. You can be damned sure I'm not asking you for approval, so why do you volunteer it to people who didn't ask? What if the government enacted a law that took away your right to worship or regulate your sexual activities? It would be wrong and I'd be here blogging about just that. As soon as anyone in a free society suggests taking rights away, or not extending the same rights to all its populace, we should all be up in arms. In my first "Do U" entry, I stated that I wanted to be a part of us all being better global citizens. Well part of that is realizing and acknowledging, and RESPECTING that people are different and we don't all lead the same lives. So are you up to accepting people from all walks of life or are you content to reside in your little bubble of hate?

I am a homosexual male and i just watched the I Hate Being Gay episode on you-tube an those men should be proud of who they are and not knocking on themselves like that. there are a lot of people that can be in 100% monogamous relationships with family's even at a young age. it saddens me that they would do this to themselves and then turn around and dog the gay community like that...

I'm a proud lesbian woman. i moved from Florida where you see open gays anywhere and everywhere you go to Ohio where its a fight anywhere you go to just hold hands with the one you love. i love how everyone is so close minded when they have no idea what were going through just to be happy. tammy66 says in her post "My problem with this gay, lesbian and bi-sexual argument is, it is being shoved in our straight faces. It's in our schools, with gay teachers bringing in books or films with homosexual activities. Gay parades that clearly celebrate how they have sex" my question to tammy66 is have you yourself ever been to a gay parade? have you ever been to a pride fest? you yourself && "the straight people" could have your day to celebrate and come together and say IM PROUD to be straight. but you chose not to. why should you discriminate on how we show our pride that we are open and happy? WHO ARE YOU TO DECIDE what our commitment should be called.there are sinners married everyday why should our sexual preferences stop us from being able to wear a ring on our finger and be able to be recognized?

I believe in gay marriage. Hell, I'm bisexual. Jesus was against hatred. He was for love. For any Christian to hate, Jesus said, is another way to commit murder. Hateful Christians - you're going against what Christ taught. Wake up and actually read the ENTIRE Bible for once - not just what's politically convenient for you.

I honestly don't know whether being gay is right or wrong. Gay people say this, Straight people say that, religious books says this, equal rights movements say that... But that's the great thing about america. You don't have to think being gay is "right" or "wrong". If you think being gay is totally discusting and uncomfortable, no one's forcing you to be gay, or look at gay people. Don't like gay relationships? Don't have one. Don't like looking at same sex couples? Turn your head. Many of you think stuffing your face with junk is wrong and think you'll pay for it later, but does that make it any better to walk up to McDonalds where an overweight kid is eating a big mac and tell him it's terrible to eat that and curse him and tell him he's going to have heart disease all for what? The fact that he likes to eat some food that just happens to be "taboo"? The truth is that however healthy or unhealthy some minority group's life style is doesn't make a licking difference to anything that applies in your life. Okay, you see two girls in wedding dresses dancing out of a chapel in Massachusettes hugging and kissing each other- oh my gosh, the sky is falling! Yeah, right. You're not being stabbed, your family isn't being held hostage, and the earth isn't going to stop revolving. If you're going to let a couple of people bending the rules a little ruin your day, then I pity you, how insecure.

i am not gay myself but i believe no one should judge no one because only god can judge me and you... and who made you god to judge gays?? not only that its inconsiderate and rude to treat someone how you would never want to be treated and if everyone was rude because of what someone else thinks is wrong we would all be hated. no one likes drama(ithink) but why cant all this hate just end and people keep their bad opinions to themselves. what baffles my mind is that some people say they would disown their children because of this... but god made all of us equal so lets treat eachother that way. STOP THE HATE AND THERE WILL BE NO VIOLENCE!

Verlinda, I'm sorry you are offended but you need to get over it. Nobody can really understand the extent of a discrimination they are not targeted by so I might not know what it's like to be black, but you have no idea what it's like to be gay and your feeling "offended" to be compared to a gay person just shows you as a homophobe. As things stand TODAY, gay people are certainly more discriminated than black people. We have a black president. Do you know how long it will be before we can have an openly gay president? And so what if gay people can hide and not show their homosexuality? If you could hide the color of your skin, would that make racism ok? The only thing that we all as part of one minority or another should understand is that we need to ALWAYS fight for equality instead of arguing over whose minority is better or should have more rights.

This is not right at all. People are hating on people who are different. once again the world is hating another society of people just because they are different.Gay people dont choose. They dont wake up in the morning and choose to be gay. To be beaten up just for walking down the street. To be judged daily just for who they are. they do not choose who they love, who they want to spend their life with.People bring the bible into this discussion. The bible also says that god loves all of his people. That god is forgiving. That people should love everyone else. That people shouldnt judge eachother. Yes, the bible might say that man and man or woman and woman sexual relationships is a sin but, why do men cheat on their wives or girlfriends when that is also a sin. People sin everyday. it doesnt matter who they love, its who they are inside what matters. Personality wise. This is their lives. they dont choose who they love. Do you choose who you love? no you dont. dont judge them for living their life. Its wrong.

Wow. I am ashamed that so many people is America thinks this way. Being homosexual is NOT A GOD DAMN CHOICE!!! With all this bullshit that people are saying about it, who is really stupid enough to wake up one day and decided "Oh, I'm going to be gay." That is NOT how it works. And your not born with it either. There is no such thing (scientifically or literlly speaking) as being born gay. It's something tha tis with you. Some people see it as a label, but it's not that either. It's the person's identity. I'm bisexual and I sure as hell didn't choose to be. You can't help who or what you fall in love with. It doesn't work like that. If it did, then what would be beautiful or meaningful about it? THat's right. There would be no meaning to it. And animals do it too, so are you assholes going to start hating on them too? YOU guys should be ashamed of YOURSELVES.
