Learn what a serving size looks like in our super-sized world!

We live in a culture of ginormous portions and super-sized upgrades. As a result, we often overeat without realizing it. So, how much should we really be eating? CLICK HERE for a handy little card you can keep in your wallet that reveals proper serving sizes. You don't even need a measuring cup or scale -- we've used everyday items to help you compare.

Measure portion sizes is your hand

- One serving of protein should be about the size of your palm.
- One serving of veggies should be the size of two fists.
- Starchy items like cooked pasta, rice or potatoes should be the size of a tightly clenched fist.

You can also visualize proper food sizes with The Portion Plate. The plate is divided into areas showing how much you are supposed to be consuming at mealtime.

Here are a few more helpful tips to keep your portions under control:

Make It a Two-fer: Your mid-day meal can work double duty if you share it with a friend, or put half into a takeout box right away so you can enjoy it as dinner later that night!

Single out Trigger Foods:
Resist eating from the box or bag. Buy snack foods in single serving sizes or divvy up full size packages into smaller, individual bags to stop mindless snacking.

Say Yes to Salads:
Eating a salad before lunch or dinner is a great way to fill up and keep from overeating.

Angelica

Alot of women try skipping meals throughout the day to save on calories. I used to be one of them. Recently I have discovered that does exactly the opposite. Skipping meals makes you so hungry that you wind up eating anything in sight when the hunger get to be to much. By eating more meals but smaller portions you actually help curve the cravings. Your body knows when it is hungry. Treat yourself to a salad, fresh fruit, maybe half a whole wheat bagel with light cream cheese between meals. Drink pleanty of water, and never skip breakfast. This and extra activites throughout the day will melt the pounds away in no time. I have lost 62 lbs in 6 mo.

Im 31 yrs old I have 3 sones 10,6,3. I have gained weight and lost weight but for some reason with the last child I cant? I dont feel good about myself anymore, dont feel like any man would ever think Im pretty. Its horrable to live with yourself when your body looks like a train ewreck from having kids. How adorable! I love the "Portion Plate." Counting calories requires juggling numbers all day, and such constant concentration on food invites temptation. Hoorah for freedom :D

Ok Tina.. calm down! I'm not Tyra.. but seriously.. no matter how heavy you are, THERE IS HELP that's out there where you CAN help yourself. I don't want you to spend another second worrying about your weight.. instead make a plan to DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT! I see victory ON YOUR SIDE!!! I have a right to say this in a way.. because I'm a medical student (that means, I'm in medical school to become a licensed physician/doctor).. so I know how the body works and why it gains weight and how you can lose it. No magical tricks will help.. just pure discipline and enthusiasm will do it! GOOD LUCK!

Try drinking a tall glass of water before you eat your meal. It will fill you so that you don't eat "all" your food. Also, when you go to a restaurant, ask for a doggy bag before you begin eating. Save 1/2 your meal and you can have it later or the next day. If you haven't noticed, the majority of Asian people are very thin, this is becuase the amounts of green tea that they intake. Try a hot cup of tea after your meals to dissolve the fat and grease that might be in your food. You can even make it cold just like iced tea for those warm days...

what matters is,how much energy you need to accomplish a certain task using your body.CD burning requires bigger energies of say,12volts and over...12 volts is like 3 largest pizzas. TAMBUA,HAMISI,KENYA

When I'm dying for something sweet, I mix a couple spoonsful of Sugar-Free Nesquick with a glass of skim milk. Then close your eyes & think of a chocolate milk shake as you drink it slowly. You'd be surprised how satisfying it is & you're getting a little extra calcium. I did that for a month & lost inches.
