Deciphering the best kind of interview outfit.
It's been a long standing tradition for wide-eyed, job hopefuls to don the run-of-the-mill "interview suit," but nowadays- - the outfit you wear to meet your destiny doesn't have to be the same old, same old. Dress for success, but make sure it's the kind of success you're looking for. Here are some tips for working the best interview outfit for your desired job.
If Creative is Your Calling...
When interviewing for jobs in the creative fields (think magazines), it's important to really think about what type of content your potential employer produces and then what type of gig you're going for. Wearing a collared dress with a blazer may be perfectly appropriate for an ad production position, but if you're looking to work on the editorial end at Vogue- - you need to let your inner fashionista out.
For Easy Going Work...
If you're interviewing at a small graphic design firm and the mood is obviously more casual- - you don't need to go the whole nine yards and put on your entire three-piece-suit. A well cut pair of pants, button up shirt and a sweater will pair nicely with some sweet heels or even nice flats. The idea is to impress, but also show your employer you understand the environment. Sometimes, it might even be okay to wear a really good pair of jeans with a dressy top and a nice jacket, or a least a more casual skirt.
When NOT to Skip the Suit...
For jobs in finance or law firms, you never want to forfeit the business attire. For any job where you know you'd need to be in a roomful of high-end executives on a daily basis, (and not ones that would start a meeting with, "okay, dudes, here's what's on the agenda..."), whip out the good ol' interview suit. Remember, these jobs require you to come off poised and professional at all times, so make sure your suit is tailored and well-fit- - this is the time to give your mom back hers and invest in a new, fashionable one of your own. These jobs will actually require you to wear it.
