Your guide to stopping breakage and nourishing relaxed hair.

relaxed_hair.jpgHair need a little TLC? Of course it does -- every head of hair needs a little lovin' every now and then, especially relaxed hair that is prone to breakage because of chemical relaxers. How do you stop the breakage to get the long, flowing (and healthy!) tresses you want? Read on for our anti-breakage tips!

Put the Brakes on Breakage
To stop breakage, you've got to cut down on the use of hot styling tools. Yes, that means cutting out overuse of flat irons and megawatt blow-dryers, especially in the summertime when the weather gets hot and steamy. Also, avoid permanent color, which can further damage relaxed hair. Still want to color your hair? Opt for demipermanent hair color or highlights instead.

Nourish, Nourish, Nourish
Your vacay from all those hot styling tools won't do much if your hair isn't nourished. But there's no need to hit up the drug store and buy a ton more products to apply to your tresses. You can nourish from within instead! Choose a vitamin and mineral supplement with ingredients that are essential for healthy hair. Look for something that contains zinc, copper, biotin and cartenoids or vitamin A. These will boost your hair's luster, help it grow and make it less brittle -- all things that will help you get the long, luscious and healthy locks you want in no time!

Thank you!!! I found the nutress products and they were great. They were reasonaly priced so I was able to get the shampoo, protein pack and the stop break. My hair hasn't looked this good in years!

It is true that Aphogee has urea in it and that comes from horse urine. It probably the reason for the smell. The original procedure called for a clarifying shampoo, Aphogee and then a moisturizer that would also cut the smell. Unfortunately, the smell does not always go away. Every time you use a curling or flat iron, you can smell it in your hair. If your hair is mushy when wet and pull apart, and it covers your hands, there is nothing you can do except start over. It doesn't sound like you are there. Using Nutress Hair Protein Pack for a deep heat conditiong treatment for 20 minutes should help you tremendously if you use it every 5 to 7 days. It has moisturizing in it so you don't have to do an addional step. Generally people use the Stop Break Leave in afterward. Follow the intructions from Charlene 32 posting. Since you are relaxing your hair yourself, I would put Hair protein pack on the lengths of your hair to protect it form overlappage of relaxer. Make sure you rinse out the relaxer thoroghly. I think that is the main cause of breakage in home kits. The water pressure is much stronger in a salon and we spend a lot of time rinsing out the relaxer. You should be spending twice the time rinsing. If you have shampoo that turns color, then you did not rinse enough.

Help!I have been doing my own relaxers and my hsir is starting to shed. I don't see any breakage but everytime I comb my hair, I get lots of hair all over my shoulders and counters. I see these post on Nutress Hair and Aphogee. Has anybody used both and can give me recommendation? I heard that Aphogee is made from horse urine and that is why it smells so bad.I'm a working mother and student so I don't have time or money to experiment. Please help

I've been relaxing my hair since I was 15. I always deep heat condition my hair with Nutress hair protein pack every week. I use a wide tooth comb to comb thru the conditioner. I start at the ends and work my way up. I don't have breakage and my hair is past my shoulders.I take good care of my hair.I cover it from the sun, I only use heat on it once a week and pin curl or wrap it at night. I use Diamond heads serum before I comb it out. If I spiral set or twist my hair, I use Stop Break leave-in and setting lotion. Oh and Lisa G. You want a pressing comb or a hot comb to get to your roots.

I have been a hair stylist for many years. Girl, please stop using that boar bristle brush. It is natural hair and if you don't condition the brush bristles and it becomes dry, it is like brushing your hair with razor blades. Black hair can not tolerate brushing. Back in the way ole days when people used to brush their hair for 100 strokes,(black &white) women could and did not wash their hair as often as they are able to today. Brushing helped to clean crap out of their hair and stimulated the scalp, which nourished the hair root stimulating hair growth. Massaging your scalp is better but if must brush and your hair is straight, no new growth, use a Denman Brush used for blow drying white folks hair.It has white nylon bristles and rubber base. The brand name is Denman. It is the best quality. Don't accept imitations like "denim" brushes, the teeth aren't as smooth and they are too sharp. Besides you want to remove the natural oils from the scalp(sebum) because it stinks and creates a haven for bacteria.

I have a real hard time getting my roots straight with the flat iron. I heard on one of your shows, a long time ago, that there is a special tool for this. Can anyone tell me where to purchase it or even its name?

For the longest i could not get my hair to grow. i was into perming and coloring and weaves. if you could do it to your hair i did it. then one day i decied to just for the most part go natural. like i only perm my hair every 4 months and when i do i only do the new growth. i only wrap my hair and when i do need to curl it i do pin curls with bobby pens i dont put heat in my hair and i wrap it every night with a satin scarf and unwrap it in the morning using kemi oil. and my hair has grown my hair has never been as long as it is since i have been a child. you do not need all differnt type of things to put in your hair it just damages it if you just for the most part keep it natural you should have no problems with your hair grown. good luck.
