It's normal for young children to put non-edibles in their mouths as they learn about their environment, but if you or someone you know continues to ingest the same non-food for one month or longer, it may be Pica disease.

So what is it? Well, let us channel old man Webster for a sec and clue you in. "Pica" comes from Latin word "magpie," a bird that known for it's tendency to eat, well, anything. Well, the magpie story is a little silly, the disease is certainly no laughing matter. Pica is treated as a serious eating disorder, sometimes resulting in serious health problems such as lead poisoning and iron-deficiency anemia.

Who gets it? Pica is often developed in people with developmental disabilities, including autism, mental retardation and in children between the ages two and three. People suffering from mental health conditions like obsessive-compulsive disorder and schizophrenia are also more likely to suffer from Pica. And pregnant women beware: If you experienced Pica as a child, it can recur in pregnancy.

And what are the symptoms?
A better question might be "What do they eat?" The answer is a lengthy one. Victims often eat any of the following: dirt, clay, paint chips, plaster, chalk, cornstarch, laundry starch, baking soda, coffee grounds, cigarette ashes, burnt match heads, cigarette butts, feces, ice, glue, hair, paper, sand, toothpaste and soap.

THIS is one of the sisters and i have been taking my iron pills but i still have those cravings to eat ashes.

Hi Tyra, I had no idea that those symtoms were a disease. I do not personally have the disease but I had a friend that constantly eats on ice chips and I also knew a person that constantly ate corn starch. She ate a box a day. I am glad you brought this condition to the light for those of us who did not know. Should I suggest my friend get checked out?

I didn't actually see the show today, but I saw the promo for it. But now I know that it is actually a disease. I have no idea what caused me to start eating flour about 5 years ago. I do have the cravings but I can go for weeks without it and suddenly, I just have to have some. Because I did not actually see the show, I would like to know if besides gaining some weight from all of the starch, if eating large amounts of flour can actually cause any other health problems??

Yes this disease goes beyond occassional junk food binges. Junk food is so appealing because the packaging alone is tasty-looking.

Hey Tyra, I wrote you a long time ago and asked you to do a show about that because I too have this disorder. I eat baby powder and I haven't told any one. I wanted to tell my mom,b ut it was really hard for me so I needed your help. It's is causing me to gain lots of weight and I can't stop. Please help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

could you guys post a video of those two sisters on this site?

I didnt know there was such a disease called pica until I saw your show. When I was 12yrs I went on vacation with my family. While staying at the hotel I went to use the bathroom. All of a sudden I had this strange urge to eat soap.I remeber crashing the little ivory soap bar with a can of hair spray.Than, I poured the crushed pieces of soap in my mouth and chewed it than, tried to swollow it. I remeber my eyes tearing and my mouth felt like it was on fire. Quickly,I spit out the pieces of chewed up soap, rinsed my mouth til it didn't burn anymore.Well from the time I was 12 to 30 Ive been secrectly eating soap. Its probally a secrect Ill take to my grave and this is the first time I ever confess to this. I give those two sisters respect fpr going on the Tyra Show and talking about it . I also suffer from cronic anemia

Hi, Ditto the last comment. I started to have pica when I was about twelve years old. I never told anyone. I knew it was abnormal. I ate brick, small pieces of old bricks. When I was thirteen, my older sister had just had a baby and she asked her Ob to look at me because I had heavy periods. He declared my periods were not abnormal, but he admitted I was anemic. Iron was prescribed to get rid of the anemia. Several times in my life after that I was found to be anemic, never telling anyone about the pica. I was always treated for the anemia. The pica continued until I was 33 years old! I was using a diaphragm for birth control, but I was interested in the new pill everyone was taking, so I asked my gynecologist to prescribe it. The pill caused me to have much lighter periods. In no time, I was no longer anemic. I am now 73 years old and have never been anemic again!

Tyra, The 2 sisters who eat flour and cigarette ashes may have an underlying medical condition. I used to crave (and eat) coffee grounds and ice. When I say I craved ice, it had to be crushed ice and I went through a bag a day. My doctor tested my hemoglobin level because he said pica in black women is usually due to an iron deficiency. The test results showed that I was severely anemic. My hemoglobin was so low my doctor was surprised that I had not passed out. I take iron pills and no longer crave those things, as a matter of fact I think it's gross. But if I start missing doses of my iron pills, I notice the cravings come back. Please pass this along to the sisters.
