It's normal for young children to put non-edibles in their mouths as they learn about their environment, but if you or someone you know continues to ingest the same non-food for one month or longer, it may be Pica disease.

So what is it? Well, let us channel old man Webster for a sec and clue you in. "Pica" comes from Latin word "magpie," a bird that known for it's tendency to eat, well, anything. Well, the magpie story is a little silly, the disease is certainly no laughing matter. Pica is treated as a serious eating disorder, sometimes resulting in serious health problems such as lead poisoning and iron-deficiency anemia.

Who gets it? Pica is often developed in people with developmental disabilities, including autism, mental retardation and in children between the ages two and three. People suffering from mental health conditions like obsessive-compulsive disorder and schizophrenia are also more likely to suffer from Pica. And pregnant women beware: If you experienced Pica as a child, it can recur in pregnancy.

And what are the symptoms?
A better question might be "What do they eat?" The answer is a lengthy one. Victims often eat any of the following: dirt, clay, paint chips, plaster, chalk, cornstarch, laundry starch, baking soda, coffee grounds, cigarette ashes, burnt match heads, cigarette butts, feces, ice, glue, hair, paper, sand, toothpaste and soap.

Tyra I've known for a while that I had this eating disorder. I've been biting my nails since I was 5, and eating J&J baby powder w/ cornstarch for about 10 years now. I can easily go through a large container of powder in a day or two. I never knew this is I why I gained so much weight. I ate baby powder through my last two pregnancies, and have not been able to stop. I'm ashamed to tell anyone even my doctor. I want to stop I can do it for like a month and then the craving just comes back. I need some help.

thanks for all of the info, i.m glad i.m not alone with this problem. I.m pregnant and crave baking powder and ice. I feel a frustration when I can.t have either or. . . I did mention it to my doctor and now i.m taking iron pills. Knowing there are others out there helps me to not feel like i.m a crazy person

I have been struggling with pica for about 18 on and off years and it is a struggle, I'm addicted to eating comet cleanser and ice, sometimes I do really well and then the next I'm back to eating comet again. I really hate that I missed this episode and hopefully I'll get to catch it in rerun soon, thank you so much Tyra for doing a show on pica... K.B.

Hi Tyra, I can't thank you enough for doing the show on people suffering from pica. And i do mean suffering. I too eat flour, its like I cant get enough so i keep eating more and more until I feel full. I keep gaining weight too, the rest of my body is in good shape but my stomach sticks out. I'm so tired of everybody asking me am i pregnant.I've seen several ideas for getting rid of this "PICA",like iron pills, and niacin. I also suffer from tiredness, and weakness. I really need to be in shape it's been a long ride. If you have any more info please help.

Hey my thing is ice and powder, I have to have these two things to get through my preganacy

Hi, I was the mother with the 9 children and grandchildren , I just wanted to add a comment, Pica is a disorder not a disease.

Hi, I just caught part of this show in putting my children out for school. I am a mother of 9 children and 10 grandchildren. My last three boys are adopted and are picas. Bart and Chris were born fetal alcohol and cocaine and also have fragile X, and autism. My youngest has downs syndrome and is a little person (dwarf and also has autism. Being a pica is as little as biting your finger nails to eating slices of wood furniture. The lady on your show with the flour , I have done myself when I was carring a baby it was the need for niacin in my body. It can be helped .It has to be a change of life style. We here as a family are living and loving with autism and that is just a small part of the things that are different in our live. I have met more so called (normal) people who are picas then of the delayed. Thank you for your time.

Hi Tyra and Community. I just wanted to comment on the the show. There were 2 sisters that ate ashes and flour. Well, here in the south, stories like that are very common. They say it originated back in slavery times when slaves would eat non food items just to keep full that eventually became anemic. You hear of people eating clay, flour, baking powder, baking soda, chalk and cornstarch. People actually go digging for clay on the sides of roads, etc. I can tell you right now that many of the pica boards are buzzing right now because someone finally shed some light on this subject. I personally began eating chalk when I was 16. I am now 30. Chalk eating then migrated into kaolin clay eating. I have tried ice, ashes, cue chalk, paper, dry wall, baby powder, and some other items to tame my cravings. Since building my iron levels back to a healthy amount, I no longer crave such items. I somewhat agree with the doctor when he said it had to do with anxiety because I noticed when I was a pican I did crave and eat more when I was stressed. This isn't a new condition, it's been around for some time and there are many support sites. There's one called Cornstarch on Yahoo Groups and the people there are very supportive. Thanks again Tyra for making others aware of this potentially deadly condtion.

I have never heard of this disease before im very suprise! I usually enjoy the taste of chalk and dirt but i dont think i have that disease. many people in my parents pueblo eat dirt and sometimes chalk but not on a daily basis. i never thought it was something bad... we just eat it to, should i say, taste it.

hi tyra, i also have PICA. I eat Kaolin(its like a rock) im addicted to it. I haven't done anything about it. I always feel weak, i cant even run anymore. I didn't know about PICA at all. I need to see a doctor. Thanx for making the warning!

i am soo glad that i ran up on tryas show about pica. i have always had this {pica} and didnt know till i saw this. it forced emotion out of me to tell my mom after 18 years. i eat foam, like the foam that you put under your bed for comfort. i find my supply in the house, most of it at the mall. maybe braclets and jewelry have the foam under it to support the up look of it. i like the sensation of chewing it in my mouth to little pieces, then i swallow the whole thing. i am also addicted to wall plaster. every since i was little i would bite into the walls of my house and leave mysterous holes. i also eat baking powder just like a regular meal, with a spoon ..i didnt know it was a problem until i saw the show..i realized other people have the same problem as me therefor it was a problem..a big one.. i broke down and told my mom and now thank god she is getting me help

I to have heard of pica because it eat baking soda, which sends my blood pressure thru tha roof! I also eat corn starch, flour, ajax w/bleach and comet cleanser. I have to have it all tha time!!! I know I need to stop because my 3y/o likes to eat tha baking soda and corn starch. I am so glad that Tyra did tha show because more awareness needs to be brought out about this and to let people know and understand that they are not alone. *R.I.P. Bernie Mac*

hi!thanks for bringing out the disease. my mom could eat several cups of raw rice in one day. we didn't know that it was something serious. we thought that it was just a bad habbit that she should stop. this maybe the reason why she's always pale. thanks alot guys! your show is really impormative and really fuuny! fierce tyra! =>

I to have pica, but not the same as some have mentiones. I sed to crave salt. And in watching the show, he asked what was going on in thier lives when they started eatting strange things. I was about eleven,(i was unhappy with my living conditios) i got in somuch trouble for leaig salt messes around my roome it got so bad that my family thought that i was doing some type o ritual to bring my dead mother back. No one ever knew i ate the slt. They started hidding t salt fromme but i ould give friends money to get me some. The more stressed i got the more i ate. Ths went on until 2005 when i was admitedin the hospita for cronic anemia. I almost died and it was cause my blood was low not hig. But after 17 days in ICC i went home and did not crave salt. Now only when my blood id low i crave salt, so as long as i take my iron and vitamin C im salt free.

Hi everyone, I too use to crave ice really bad. It was awful. It had to be crushed ice or "used" ice. If anyone in my family had finished their drink and was gonna throw their ice in the sink, I had a fit. I wanted that ice. I HAD to have it. It was good soft ice. Well I finally found out I too was very anemic & my hemoglobin was terribly low. After having extensive lab work, my Hemotologist/ Oncologist put me on iron IV infusions and eventually I had to have a blood transfusion bc my blood count was so low!!! So craving ice is something you should really tell your physician. My blood count has been fine & I haven't had anymore anemia since then.
