It's normal for young children to put non-edibles in their mouths as they learn about their environment, but if you or someone you know continues to ingest the same non-food for one month or longer, it may be Pica disease.

So what is it? Well, let us channel old man Webster for a sec and clue you in. "Pica" comes from Latin word "magpie," a bird that known for it's tendency to eat, well, anything. Well, the magpie story is a little silly, the disease is certainly no laughing matter. Pica is treated as a serious eating disorder, sometimes resulting in serious health problems such as lead poisoning and iron-deficiency anemia.

Who gets it? Pica is often developed in people with developmental disabilities, including autism, mental retardation and in children between the ages two and three. People suffering from mental health conditions like obsessive-compulsive disorder and schizophrenia are also more likely to suffer from Pica. And pregnant women beware: If you experienced Pica as a child, it can recur in pregnancy.

And what are the symptoms?
A better question might be "What do they eat?" The answer is a lengthy one. Victims often eat any of the following: dirt, clay, paint chips, plaster, chalk, cornstarch, laundry starch, baking soda, coffee grounds, cigarette ashes, burnt match heads, cigarette butts, feces, ice, glue, hair, paper, sand, toothpaste and soap.

I have the same problem. I really just want to stop doing this. I eat tissue and I have been doing this for about 7 years now... it is getting expensive. I have to buy soooo much extra tissue because I always eat so much. I am gaining weight and think this is the reason why...30 pounds in 2 months...I want to get some medicine for this b/c iron pills don't help anymore...

OMG. I never saw this episode but i wish i would have. I suffer from a flour addiction and its pretty hard to stop. I consume a 2lb bag in 2 weeks. I sprinkle salt on it and eat the flour right out of the bag with a plastic spoon. I hide the addiction from as many people in my life as possible but they probably think it is strange how fast flour goes in my house. The cravings are so intense that when i'm away from home i cant wait to get home to fulfill my secret desire. I enjoy both the texture and taste of it.

I'd just like to say that PICA is a disorder, not a disease. I have always craved baby powder and chalk. I enjoy the texture. I used to peel off and eat my nail polish when I was younger. I would eat lollipop paper and the paper used to hold packaged cupcakes/muffins. I stopped eating those things for a while, but I recently started craving again. I'm currently eating baby powder and grounded chalk. Its very difficult to stop, the cravings get overwhelming. I have started to eat my make up. I wear make up on a daily basis. I've been spending a lot of money (especially on MAC products) because I end up eating any fine powdered make up especially mineral based ones. Its pretty bad because I can't get rid of my make up kit and I can't control the cravings. I also noticed that I can eat a whole apple or pear, the core, seeds, and stalk. I try to read up on PICA as much as I can, I feel like there's limited information out there. Reading all the comments on this board helped me feel better about this condition. I don't know if I am anemic. I am easily tired, tend to sleep a lot, and get dizzy spells. I don't know if these are symptoms of chronic anemia. I'm working on obtaining health insurance so that I can consult a doctor about this.

Hi Tyra not until recently I knew I had a disease named Pica... I am addicted 2 eating baby powder.. I have been eating it since I was a child I stopped when I got older n started again two years ago..It has gotten so bad that I keep purse size powder in my bag.. I am to embaressed to tell anyone and wish I could get some help for it but thanx for bringing this to the light for me

hey, im doing a report over this disease in my medical terminology class and i never knew anything like this existed!!!!!! i didn't see the show but i have read all these comments and i think that its really cool and brave that they went on the show because i think that if i had the disease i wouldn't tell anyone except my mom!!!!!!

Omg. I have been looking for answers for so long about this very topic. Thanks to this show I now know what I suffer from. Every since I was a little girl I enjoyed the taste of dirt. As I grew older I stopped eating it. I ignored my cravings. Just to give you a good time line I am gonna say that I stopped around 5 years old. I got married at 18 and it was the most stressful experiance of my life. Around the time it was easier to give in to these unnatural urges. I could be driving to work or home and pass by dirt piles or dirt drive ways and my mouth would water. I just wanted to eat it so bad. But I was so scared. I know in my logical mind that its not right but I couldn't help my self. When no one was looking I would do something like drop my keys on the ground or my cell phone and as i was picking them back up I would rub my had in the dirt just to capture the dust. Thank you tyra for this topic and letting me know that I need help. I have recently developed and intense craving for ice!

Hey Tyra, I have always had a fettish with playing in dirt and sand and smelling comet cleanser. When I became pregnant, I developed this urge to taste the comet. I felt so ashamed that I would drink a lot of water afterward. Then I started eating powder with cornstarch. I liked the taste better. It got better when I took this liquid iron called Floradix. I did good for a while, smelling and playing in powdery stuff, but not eating. I am pregnant again and we burn incense in the house. I have started eating the ashes. I am a teacher, and we have chalkboards. I don't eat the chalk, but I do eat the chalk dust when I clean my boards. I am taking the iron again, but it is not helping. I am really afraid that I am hurting my baby and I am really ashamed. Nobody knows how bad it is. I knew I was not alone, but I did not know how many people craved the same things I do.

I thought that I was the only one... It all started when I was 22... My ex-boyfriend had bought a box of chaulk home and for some reason, I craved for it, the moment I opened the box. Although, I was just chew on it and spit it out, I thought that it was very unusual. Then when I was pregnant w/my now 8yr old daughter, I graduated w/baby powder w/cornstarch... But once again, I would chew it and spit it out... Last year, I've have experience the most trama in my life and picked up smoking (black and mild) and still craved for powder. But one day when I was smoking, I immediately was taken by a strong craving to eat the remaining ashes... Let's just say I've been eating more ashes than powder now. Haven't had powder in about 6 months. Where I work, we have a smoke room and now I gather other people's ashes into a black and mild box and eat them when I get home. I've noticed that my hair is breaking, I'm always tired and often feel weak and undefeated everyday. I sometimes grasp for air in the middle of the night!!! Often feel as if I have a hangover. I've lost 52 lbs (DON'T TRY THIS AT HOME) and wear a size 5, sometimes a 4. On top of that, I've suffered from severe depression that I try to hide. I often want to change, but sometimes I don't! That's the only thing that brings me comfort.

Dear Tyra, My name is Mechelle and I live in Mississippi. I have a habit that I just can't seem to shake. I eat dirt. A lady in my hometown sells it for about five dollars a bag. She digs the clay out of the ground, bags it,and then sells it to clay eaters. She has so many customers until one day the police raided her house because they thought she was selling drugs, only to find she was selling clay dirt. I live about four hours from home, so I've found a place on the internet that sells it. You can go to bestwhitedirt.com to see the web site. The best white dirt is not the same. It's more of a pure kaolin clay. The dirt in Mississippi is chalk and clay mixed together. I can't stop eating it and have spent seventy dollars alone this month for dirt. I need help. Mechelle

Tyra. I didn't know of this thing called PICA. I am 18 and ever since I could remember I always managed to get into the medicine cabinets and eat baking soda. I figured out that if you add water to it and let it dry it's much easier to eat and lees messy. I can stop eating it for about a week and a half but after that I have to have it. I buy atleast 3 to 5 boxes of if and prep the ones that I'm not eating from just like that. It's starting to become an issues to me because I can't even really make it up the steps to my apartment sometimes and I live on the fourth floor. I always wanted to be a model but I realized that I couldn't while eating baking soda because I wouldn't be able to walk a runway or loose the weight that baking soda adds. I did all the research but no matter what I find nothing is really helpful. I don't know why I have these cravings for baking soda because according to the doctors I'm not deficient in any vitamins or anything in that matter. and it's not just the taste I crave either (though I do like the taste as well). It feels as if it settles in my stomach comfortably. I can't understand why I have this craving. I didn't see the episode but I heard about it through a friend and I was wondering if you had any advice or help.

Dear Tyra , I also have pica I just notice this year I've been having a craving for cigarette ashes and ice and I'm a non smoker. I'm 35 years old and I have always ever since I was 13 years old had problems with my iron being low and was on iron pills for this I have 4 boys and I never craved this while I was pregnant, but I didn't stop taking my iron pills until after my 4th child when he was 6 years old and tis craving just started this year. I seen your show when you had a young lady & her sister on the show having these same problems and thats when I decieded to do something about it , because before then I was asham I thought I was the only one. Thank You and those young ladies for sharing this story to make me & others come out about our problem so we won't feel alone.Nessa

I watched the show and the psychologist on the show had an amazing saying, but unfortunately I forgot what he said. Tyra had him repeat it, but I still don't remember what he said. It was very inspirational and he said it right after he talked about the sisters, I believe. If anyone could please send me the quote I would greatly appreciate it! :)
