It's normal for young children to put non-edibles in their mouths as they learn about their environment, but if you or someone you know continues to ingest the same non-food for one month or longer, it may be Pica disease.

So what is it? Well, let us channel old man Webster for a sec and clue you in. "Pica" comes from Latin word "magpie," a bird that known for it's tendency to eat, well, anything. Well, the magpie story is a little silly, the disease is certainly no laughing matter. Pica is treated as a serious eating disorder, sometimes resulting in serious health problems such as lead poisoning and iron-deficiency anemia.

Who gets it? Pica is often developed in people with developmental disabilities, including autism, mental retardation and in children between the ages two and three. People suffering from mental health conditions like obsessive-compulsive disorder and schizophrenia are also more likely to suffer from Pica. And pregnant women beware: If you experienced Pica as a child, it can recur in pregnancy.

And what are the symptoms?
A better question might be "What do they eat?" The answer is a lengthy one. Victims often eat any of the following: dirt, clay, paint chips, plaster, chalk, cornstarch, laundry starch, baking soda, coffee grounds, cigarette ashes, burnt match heads, cigarette butts, feces, ice, glue, hair, paper, sand, toothpaste and soap.

walmart non salt crackers are the best...

Okay when i hit puberty, i started rubbing my hands in the comet and wash detergent. i wanted to eat it but the taste was terrible...i thought of a food product that i could grind up to the texture of comet and detergent, i tried potato chips...but i wasn't satisfied with the texture..then i took some saltine crackers, put them in the blender until they were the texture of dirt.. and the taste was perfect.it feels like utopia when i eat that stuff,, the taste of real food never compares.but i gained alot of weight ...i try to cut back alot in my life..the best i can do now is about 1 or 2 boxes a week..better than a box a day though....

Hi, I too ate tissue - as a child I ate paper and sponges, and then about seven years ago (I'm 38 now) my consumption of tissue has been extreme, I would suffer from tummy cramps etc. However, I would like to share that for over two months now I have not chewed tissue. I have been able to confide in my lovely husband who finds it all confusing BUT he has been a rock, I also told two of my sisters as I feel its important to talk about it - makes it more real. Im determined to do this, its real difficult, I too would comment that I would describe myself as a middle class UK resident - PICA affects all types of people.

Hi I chew rubber bands. I love the smell and the taste of rubber. I don't actually eat the bands, just chew them until they get to bits then spit them out. When I was about 7, I started chewing a black rubber pedal from a bicycle because I liked the bitter taste!! Then as I got older everytime there was a new school term, I'd buy my pens and pencils and look for the pink erasers and actually slice bits off them and eat them! They tasted slightly acidic but I loved the taste. I'm now back chewing rubber bands. I stopped for about ten years then started again... I know my teeth are wearing down slowly but I can't seem to help myself.

I eat Georgia White clay. I ordered it online and received about two pounds of it. I broke up the large clay into smaller pieces. I pop a few pieces in my mouth every day and I think it tastes really good, it tastes the same way it smells outside after it rains. It also melts in your mouth like chocolate and the Georgia White clay has no sandy grit in it like dirt does. I am a 40yr old father with 5 kids, married to my beautiful wife for 18 years and have a great full time job. I do not feel like I need to stop eating the clay, however I do limit how much I eat due to the fact I don't care much for constipation. I guess I have Pica, but to me it is a normal thing. My wife always comments that my lips are white again. Anyhow, I just wanted to share that it is not limited to people with mental disorders or low income areas. It can be at any income level and of any mental capacity.

I wish I could've seen this episode. I am a 31 mother of a 1yro. When I was pregnant, I suffered from PICA. I craved chalk, clay, dirt and starch. I would be in a business meeting and totally focus on the chalk one of the managers would be using wanting to snatch it out of his hands so I could eat it. Every since I birthed my son, my cravings have changed and now I am sniffing pine sol, BC, and comet, as well as licking the substance off my hands because I clean everyday with both of them. I can't stop. No matter how hard I try.
