How to deal with nighttime potty problems.

Ah, motherhood. You can file bed wetting under the not-so-glam side of having kids. Rest assured that your kid is not alone: Typically 7 million children between the ages of 6 and 16 experience this problem. But the upside is that it's entirely manageable. All it takes is the proverbial ounce of prevention and a change of bedtime routines and voila -- your kiddo sleeps in dry sheets (and you get a good night's sleep!).

Don't assign blame. Reassure your child that this is normal at their age, that it isn't their fault and that you understand they're not doing it on purpose. Also, do not punish or tease your child for wetting the bed -- and make sure other family members do the same.

Cut down on drinks.
Seems like a no-brainer, but it's true. The first step is to avoid letting the little one drink large amounts of fluid two hours before bedtime. Then have your child use the toilet just before going to bed.

The sheet situation. A plastic cover between the sheets and mattress will help to protect the bed. And when accidents do happen, let your child help change the wet sheets.

Work it out. Consider practicing bladder-stretching exercises in which your child will try to increase the time between potty trips during the daytime. This way the bladder can learn to stretch and hold more urine at night. And you can also practice an awakening routine -- one in which you become a human alarm clock of sorts. This way, you can wake your child up to go potty two to three hours after he or she hits the hay. Before long, it should become a routine they adopt themselves. And you can rest easy!

I'm not a bed wetter....however; I recently hurt my back really bad, come to find out I had pinched nerves for a long time. I talked to my chiropractor about it and he went thorough a huge list of issues you could have from pinched nerves....and one of them was bed wetting. He said that he had helped so many children with that, just by relieving the tension from the nerves. Think about it. Everything is connected to your nerves and when they are pinched, they don't function properly. On top of that, I think posture is a huge issue with a lot people...including myself. (slouching, etc) My neck is also very straight, and they have been working on correcting the posture of it. I was just about ready to go to the eye doctor about having blurred vision, and he fixed it after the fifth visit. So maybe take that route. Get some x-rays done of your back. I know that with he lower back, the nerves down there connect to your organs......bed wetting??!!

Hey there, I too used to have a bedwetting problem when I was a kid. Then I have my children and my youngest had the same problem. I finally brought my child in @age 8. Our family physician prescribed an older mild antidepressant(imipramine) at a low dosage for a few months. Worked like a dandy. My child no longer has that problem, as the kidneys were able to send a signal to the brain a lot sooner that its time to get up for the bathroom trip. ANYONE one antidepressants can tell you that your constantly running to the bath room. It was safe and effective. Tyra, please have your crew check into this. Take care and bless you.

VERY IMPORTANT!!! PLEASE READ!!! I was a bed wetter from the age of 0 to 18 years old. I a now 52 years old I lived in a small town in Louisina and my mom did everything - she set alarms 3-4 times a night & tried to get me up and everything else. And trust me in the 1960's & 1970's - there were no pull-ups... My problem WAS NOT a medical condition. My problem was that my sleep pattern was so strong - nothing (and I do mean nothing) would wake me up. I was a senior & still didn't go to friends houses to spend the night. As my graduation gift, my mother set an appointment with our family doctor who was very open minded to new things and he hypnotised me. Within 2 weeks I was no longer a bed wetter. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE spread this word to the mother of that precious little girl that this could also be her problem. I thought I would never marry or anything else - because this consumed my entire life. My Mom & Dad were great and never, ever punished, ridiculed me or anything else other than support me. I was 1 of 5 siblings and times were hard but my Mom did this for me to have a normal life. I had 2 children and neither one of them wet the bed - so that also was a blessing. Please let me know if I can answer any other questions. My best to anyone who has this problem - I just think that no one realizes that there are other options out there besides medicine (which did not work for me). Thanks, Gretta Preston

alot has happend tyra email me please

g r r L thank you ears covered THANK YOU dang one request thank you i ask for blessings on you thanx dang

I FOUND OUT WHAT ALOT OF PEOPLE HAVEE STATED THAT IF YOU DO NOT GIVE CHILDREN LARGE AMOUNTS OF LIQUID BEFORE THEY HIT THE BED IS GOOD. IF YOU MAKE SURE THEY GO TO THE BATHROOM BEFORE BED IS GOOD AND IF YOU WAKE THEM UP PERIODICALLY IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT IS GOOD AS WELL. ASIDE FROM THE SLIGHT FIGHT YOU MAY HAVE TO GO THROUGH TO GET THEM OUT OF BED OR GET THEM BACK TO SLEEP ITS BETTER TO DO THAT THEN TO HAVE TO WASH SHEETS ON A NON WASH DAY, LOL!!

Hi tyra, I have wet the bed from when i was about 5 and now im 15 and i still wet the bed my mom is a nurse and we talk about it but i have not done anything about it. M parents always tell me wash your blankets and sheets they also say U need to stop wetting the bed im getting tired of this. I have told them that i dont feel the urge to go the bed at night because i am a very deep sleeper. I am a very deep sleeper i snore very loud i dont hear storms or fire alarms that go off at night because of my sleeping condidtion. I'm always nervous to sleep at a friends house i always go to the bathroom as much as i can before i go to bed but sometimes i still do and i try to cover it up. My family and only my best friend knows about my condition and my sister wets the bed to but she is only 9. Tyra i need help i dont want to wake up every morning with wet sheets and clothes i hate it.

Hey Tyra, When I was a cild I used to wet the bed too. It was inherited from my father. I was the same way with not wanting to sleep at friends house. I didnt want anyone to know. I seen many doctors and I was given a nasal spray that I only used when I was at sleep overs or when my friends spent the night at my house. I just told everyone that it was an allergy medication that I had to take every night before I went to sleep. I also didnt drink anything two hours before I went to sleep. I also was the child that thought that it was never going to go away. If I can remember right I didnt grow out of this habit until I was about 14 years old. It is embarrasing but you need someone thier telling you that you are going to grow out of it and that it is normal, but it will go away. I felt very restricted to what I could do as a child and now a days their are a lot more things that can help with this situation.

My daughter had an occasional bed wetting when she was in the 2nd grade. She would wake up and come tell me she wet the bed. We would do the clean up then she would go back to sleep. I always connected it to dranking too much o.j. or eating too much watermelon. By the 3rd grade something else happened. One night as I watched TV in the living room, she had been asleep for awhile in her bedroom, walked in and she was drooling and her lips looked swollen. She was trying to talk but I could not understand her. I had her say the alphabet for me and it was unclear. I was scared for her and she looked scared too. The slured speech soon ended. So the next day I made her an appoinment with the doctor. After a sleep deprived test we were informed that she was having seisures while she slept. She was on meds for the seizures until the begining of 7th grade.

TYRA, I just recently posted a comment, and I think you should dedicate an entire show to "children and even adults (teens and early 20's) bed wetting". I THINK ITS IMPORTANT FOR PEOPLE TO UNDERSTAND THAT WE ARENT DISCUSING FOR WETTING THE BED, THAT WE JUST CAN'T HELP IT! AND THAT ITS THE WAY THAT OUR BODIES GROW AND ABOUT OUR HORMONES! PEOPLE JUST REALLY NEED TO UNDERSTAND THE TRUTH ABOUT BED WETTING!

I had the same problem till I was about 10. (I'm in my mid 20s now) I went on medication that didn't work, the doctors couldn't find a problem. I DON'T BELIEVE IT'S A PROBLEM IN THE MIND AT ALL. The commercial, I think it was PULL UPS, hit the nail on the head: SOME KIDS GROW FAST AND THEIR BLADDERS CAN'T KEEP UP. My advice? No drinking 2 hours before bed and wake her up during the night for a bathroom break, twice if need be. That's what my mom used to do for me. It'll go away evenutally. Have patience :)
