How to deal with nighttime potty problems.

Ah, motherhood. You can file bed wetting under the not-so-glam side of having kids. Rest assured that your kid is not alone: Typically 7 million children between the ages of 6 and 16 experience this problem. But the upside is that it's entirely manageable. All it takes is the proverbial ounce of prevention and a change of bedtime routines and voila -- your kiddo sleeps in dry sheets (and you get a good night's sleep!).

Don't assign blame. Reassure your child that this is normal at their age, that it isn't their fault and that you understand they're not doing it on purpose. Also, do not punish or tease your child for wetting the bed -- and make sure other family members do the same.

Cut down on drinks.
Seems like a no-brainer, but it's true. The first step is to avoid letting the little one drink large amounts of fluid two hours before bedtime. Then have your child use the toilet just before going to bed.

The sheet situation. A plastic cover between the sheets and mattress will help to protect the bed. And when accidents do happen, let your child help change the wet sheets.

Work it out. Consider practicing bladder-stretching exercises in which your child will try to increase the time between potty trips during the daytime. This way the bladder can learn to stretch and hold more urine at night. And you can also practice an awakening routine -- one in which you become a human alarm clock of sorts. This way, you can wake your child up to go potty two to three hours after he or she hits the hay. Before long, it should become a routine they adopt themselves. And you can rest easy!

For anyone who is out there, i'm a fifteen year old boy who used to wet the bed until very recently, it was my deepest darkest secret and I thought i would never grow out of it. I remember countless nights crying myself to sleep and asking why i couldent be like anyone else that i knew. At school I was allways known as that outgoing, funny, has alot of friends kid that seemed to have the perfect life. Well all of that was just a front that I put on. I realized this when I was about 13 and I began to go through a stage in my life when I just cried practically everynight. My parents were so supportive, I took medications, went to go see specialists, went through a relly expensive program, tried alarms. And none of these things seemed to work. Until I was about 14. When the problem that basically controlled my childhood ended, the feelings that I felt were so unbelivable. I'm really happy now and now my friends know who i really am. For anyone who is still wetting the bed just don't give up, because I can allmost assure you 100% that it will end and you will have a new outlook on life

Hey Tyra, I'm 20 years old, and I have wet the bed pretty steadily for my whole life. At 18, it finally stopped for a while, but came back within a few months. I have been to the doctor, had tests done, taken medication... nothing. Alarms never worked, because they were so uncomfortable, I would either take them off, or just not sleep good because of them. Now, I seem to wet about 2-3 times a month- usually consecutivly, and often around my period. I think it might be stress related, but for some reason I am even too embarrased to tell my therapist. I have never dated anyone, and fear I will never get married, because it would be too embarrising to mention that 'honey, I wet the bed'. I just don't know what to do- how can I fix this??

My younger sister has been wetting her bed since i could remeber, now she is 14 and she still wets the bed. When she was younger we took her to the doctor and they found nothing wrong with her.She also used to wet herself in school but stopped in elementary school, but she still has the problem of wetting her bed.She saids she doesn't feel when she wets the bed mostly because she is a heavy sleeper. But later i found out that in my mom's and dad's family there have been a lot of bed wetters. Could it be possible that it runs in the family? Probably not but its bad for my sister since she feels embarrassed.

hi im 19 years old and i was flipping the channels today and saw the show. i have a medical condition called Spina Bifida and have no bladder control, i will most likely wet the bed for the rest of my life. i try very hard to stay dry but most of the time i wake up wet. i wear pull-ups all day. people do not realize so many people have this problem whether it is medical or mental or physical or whatever. although i am a male, i completely understand what so many of your female viewers are going through. this honestly is just another example of the ignorance in our world today. yes, i hate that i wet the bed, but no, i dont think that makes me any less of a person.

For the older ones. Yeah its been a struggle my whole life until I was 16 or 17. Im now 19. I belive it's a hormone problem mostly. I've done research and, for myself, I found a lifesaver. 1.Demopressin- This medication alone showed drastic improvement and I only woke up wet only a few times a month. 2.Indomethacin- THE CURE FOR ME. Taken with the demopressin I have NEVER wet the bed. These two medications let me finally be able to go on vacations and spend the night with my friends without any worries. I am willing to talk to anyone with questions because I wish I could help someone knowing what it did for my life. **Also not drinking or even EATING dairy products after 1p.m. and of course only drinking water (no dairy, caffine, or juice) after 1 p.m. just might do the trick !

I'm not a bed wetter....however; I recently hurt my back really bad, come to find out I had pinched nerves for a long time. I talked to my chiropractor about it and he went thorough a huge list of issues you could have from pinched nerves....and one of them was bed wetting. He said that he had helped so many children with that, just by relieving the tension from the nerves. Think about it. Everything is connected to your nerves and when they are pinched, they don't function properly. On top of that, I think posture is a huge issue with a lot people...including myself. (slouching, etc) My neck is also very straight, and they have been working on correcting the posture of it. I was just about ready to go to the eye doctor about having blurred vision, and he fixed it after the fifth visit. My husbands headaches stopped after he started going. So maybe take that route. Get some x-rays done of your back. I know that with the lower back, the nerves down there connect to your organs......bed wetting??!! So, before your diagnosed with something, consider not taking pills, or thinking that there is a mental issue with yourself. It could just be a back problem.
