3080%20ps%20blog.jpg If you're sure you want to go forward with plastic surgery, you must look further than the yellow pages. Dr. Jay Calvert urges you to keep these tips in mind when researching a plastic surgeon.

Ask for Referrals: Talk to your primary care doctor, family and friends -- or patients you know who have had good plastic surgery experiences. The best referrals come from trusted sources.

Check Board Certification: Check the doctor's status of board certification in the field of plastic surgery at the American Board of Medical Specialties.

Check for Society Memberships: Find out if your surgeon is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. A plastic surgeon cannot be a member of this society unless he or she is board certified.

Check for State Licensing: Check with the state board of medicine to see if your physician is licensed in the state where you are planning your operation.

Check for Hospital Privileges: Find out if your surgeon has privileges to perform your operation at the local hospital. If they do, it means that the hospital's medical staffing board believes the surgeon is properly trained and credentialed to perform your operation.

Watch Out for Malpractice History: Malpractice suits can be checked through a number of avenues, but may require that you make a trip to the county courthouse to check your doctor. Internet resources are robust in most states.

Check for Training: Verify credentials and training.

Find a Doctor who Specializes in Your Procedure: Most plastic surgeons have several operations that are their favorite and that they are known for, meaning they consistently generate excellent results.

Make Sure a Doctor Has Malpractice Coverage: Verify malpractice insurance coverage. It is important to know if your surgeon has made a commitment to his patients by carrying some type of malpractice insurance.

Ask About Continuing Medical Education: It is useful to know if your surgeon attends local and national meetings to keep up on the latest technology. A commitment to such education is a sign that your surgeon has not kicked back into relaxation mode.

Don't Concentrate on Advertising: Advertising has become quite common for plastic surgeons, dermatologists, facial plastic surgeons and anti-aging physicians of all types. The market is competitive, and advertising is a way to spread the word. However, a large amount of advertising does not necessarily mean anything. You must still look at all of the items listed above and make your own judgment.

NEXT: Is Cuddling Better than Sex?

Tyra Hello! I just turned 36 on August 6 and have 2 beautiful girls, one of 6 and the other of 5. I had a gastrobybass 3 years ago and lost 110 pounds. I am very depressed now because of all the lose skin especially the lose of my breasts....I have none. I found myself much prettier when I was overweight. I see myself in pictures and don't have the shine I had back then. I recently sent to my medical insurance to pay for tummy tuck and breast but they denied my petition. I am looking into doing my surgery in the Dominican Republic, but don't know how to go about it. I recently graduated from college and looking for work, which means I have no money. I am thinking of using next years income tax to go do this. I'm scared and hoping to receive some type of education for me to do this. This show was helpful but I would like an additional support by someone. Plse Help!!!!!

Tyra, your show on plastic surgery today was really alot of help to me. I have been thinking about having well quite a few things done. I am a 48 year old woman and I lost about 40 lbs in a ver short amount of time. over about 2 and 1/2 months. i wasnt that much over weight i was about 155 and 5ft 6in.. I am now somewhere around 117. This has of coars left me with alot of extra skin. and it definitley aged my face also. i was just curious are there certain types of excercise that can help ya know like for the sagging butt thing. (I used to have a nice one, now thats gone) or even possibly gaining some weight back, could that help. or just make matters worse. I do not have as much of an extreme problem as alot of the brave people on your show today, but, i do need some help.

Hi Tyra I am 20 and a mother of 2 year old twins and a 8 week old baby girl.I got 16 more pounds to lose and then i will be looking for a plastic surgeon for a mommy makeover.I am so glad that i watched your show today now i know what to look for and hopefully i can fill better about myself.I love your shows they help me alot, i watch them every day.

I've as about as much of your show today as I could stand. Shame on you and that so called doctor for ganging up on that 14 y/o girls mother. I take it that neither one of you read the Holy Bible and what is says about sex before marrige. That mother is teaching her daughter the right way according to the gospel and you and your media partners are sending millions of peoplr to Hell with your worldly pleasing acceptence of sin. I used to be proud of you and your accomplishments (before I was saved)but now discernment has shown me that you are nothing but an anti-Christ. I hope to God that you repent and get saved and stop trying to please the world.

I had a series of life saving operations at the age of eight, and it left me with two "railroad track" scars on my abdominal area. Through my pre-teenage years, I was very self concious of changing in the locker room at school. I was sick of the people standing near me asking 'what happenned to you?' I wouldn't even wear a bikini, even though the scars got paler over time. When I started high school, my Dad took me in for a consultation to have the scars removed, but after our appointment, he took me aside and said,"you know some people don't wake up from that." I thought it over and decied that it wasn't worth going under the knife again, unless my life was at stake. I'm seventeen now, and I love the way I look! I don't fear changing in locker rooms, and I'm now proud of my scars. I even consider them body art, and don't mind showing them off. Thank you, Tyra for emphasizing the dark side of cosmetic surgery. I feel more confident than ever now about my body, and am so glad that I didn't go through with the procedure three years ago.

Tyra, I have thinking about getting plastic surgery for awhile and my boy friend says I don't need it and that I'm beautiful the way I am; but I think he is just being a sweetheart. I know if I did get it I would be more happy with myself and he would enjoy it too. But I don't know to many people that have had, actually just one. She lived in Cali before she moved here. I also, have no idea where to go to get it done. I want to get a little lipo and my breast done. I know I will feel so much better about it. I just don't know what to do about it all. I love your show and watch it literally everyday! Yea some of the topics most shows would never do but you go that extra step and have topics that really effect people in their everyday lives. Thank you for that!! Il vostro punto di vista notevolmente è apprezzato. Abbia un giorno meraviglioso!

Hey Tyra! How are you! It's 18:30 in my country now. What's the time in America? In our China, plastic surgeon is not very common.if we want to have a plastic surgeon, we may just do a face lifting. So maybe we don't need to care too much about it. But i think in the future, many people will have a try. My mother always says "Dearing, you'll much beautiful if you have bigger eyes." Haha, maybe i can have an ophthalmologic operation. Thank you for your advice, they're so serviceable! I love you, dear Tyra! May you have a good day!
