What's In A Name?

3081-baby-names.jpg We know you shouldn't judge a person by their name. But sometimes people really become the name their parents gave them. Can you imagine Tyra by any other name? What if her name was Denise? Or Juanita? Would you love her just as much?

Do you think names affect personality? Does a name have an effect on someone's success in life? Tell us what you think.

i'm very proud of my name i don't care what people its just me

My name is a common name but spelled diffrent Melisa one s and one l. Everyone encluding my teachers, frends and some relitives spell it wrong. When I was younger I hated it but now I just tell men im like my name common but with a twist.

Hey Tyra & Tyra fans!
My comment is actually about my cousin, her name is Quavodia (pronounced: KWA-VODY-A), but we all call her Vodi. Her name is very unique. When people hear her name, they ask her what her nationality is. First of all, we (my cousin and I) always get asked what nationality we are, because we're both mixed with black, irish, and native american.
I love her name, and I think if you have a unique name you should embrace, and take pride in it! =D
Take Care,
Jasmine

Hi Tyra.

Hey everyone! Yea i know what u mean about how everyone stereotypes u just by ur name. My name is Nadia and i'm 22. I'm white and i'm Lebonese, Italian, and Slovak. When i tell them my name they ask me if i'm russian. My mom named me after the famous gymnast Nadia Comaneci and i hate it. I'm in my 4th year of college and it still takes my professors a few tries before the finally pronounce my first and last names correctly. I was originally supposed to be named ashley too! I'm still not even sure if i'm happy with my name. I dont want an original name like ashley or sarah(no offense to anyone that has the name) but i atleast want to find someone else who has my name. i've never met anyone with my name yet and i'm 22. and i also always wanted to go into a store and find a pencil or a keychain that has my name on it. I have yet to find one of those too!!

Hay Tyra! my name is Jada and most people like a name like that but i already know 6 poeple in my school and there name is Jada. I really want to change my name to JADALIA but mymom thinks it makes no sense

Hello Tyra!
I don't know if you'll read this but i'm going to post anyway! My name is Yobie.( yes, pronouced Yo-bee)I used to hate my name so,so much. I would always be told 'that's so asian',etc.) it would be so irritating! I'd always wish I had a normal name just because my name was different and exotic. How my name came to be is the most craziest thing, right after I was born, my whole family started putting letters together and I ended up with the name Yobie. It's very annoying when I get called nicknames such as YO! B!, Yobebe, Yobs, Yobyob, etc. I'd always have this self-consciousness right when I have to introduce myself! It puts a lot of pressure on me knowing that someone will judge my name and attack me emotionally, especially when they ask for repetition right after I say my name. But now as I am 15, I have learned to embrace and love my own name. I think it's unique and original.

Hi Tyra.
I am from Russia, I saw yr show today and I am very surprise from USA. Yr country is very open minded and at the same time I see how miserable people are. Many people are under race preassure. The subject about race is so popular among people, and I think this problem was created by Government and Media. I know it can happen any where in the world, if we point on differences, and then continuous say this is bad. Finaly we will create negative object for whole life.
Tyra please dont open subject about discrimination,it will not help. In my opinion u have to talk more about talent, creativity, smartness, to show beautiful site of human regardless to their origin.
I think a unique names in fashion this days.
Thank you bye.

Hey Tyra,
It makes me extremely sad, angry and frustrated to think i am constantely judged based on my name. My name is Viridiana, very unique and hard to say to many people. I believe I am a very smart, caring young girl with a lot of potential to do many things in her life and if someone ever decides not to give me a chance based on my name then they are missing out, so i wouldn't be that upset. We all have something great to offer and whether others take adventage and appreciate it, its their choice.

my name is Christian David i think my name rocks!! and it fits not only me but my personality as well. i do think names make the person to a certain degree

Well if your name was Shaquita ur gonna be judged or thought of AS A BLACK GHETTO POOR LOUD RUDE WEAVE WEARIN OVERWEIGHT GIRL. And if ur name is Britney u would be steretyped as THE SLUTTY BLONDE WHITE GIRL SHOWIN THERE PRVS OUT IN PUBLIC WHO THINKS SHE CAN GET WHATEVER SHE WANTS AND SLEEPS WITH EVER GUY SHE MEETS IN THE CLUB W/ A LITTLE DOG IN THE PURSE TYPE. a name like Mohamed would stereotyped as the MUSLIM TERRORIST BOMBING AN AIRPLANE AND HATES ALL AMERICANS. THATS JUST HOW REALTIY IS!

hi tyra my name is sandy and my boyfriend's name is omar we named our daughter who is now 7 months Samari. I am Mexican an my boyfriend is black. we got her name through our names

SANDY SA
OMAR MAR

WE GET ALOT OF BS BECAUSE OF HER NAME!!!!!!!

Hello Tyra!
My name is Josélia, I live in Portugal. My name may not sound like an unusual portuguese name but when I grew up, I didn't know anyone named like me, and neither did anyone else, by the way. As a result, I always had to say my name at least twice when introduced to someone. Furthermore, people hardly said my name right when referring to me. I have been, and still am, called Gisela, much more usual, Graziella, also very unusual, Josélita, Joselina, Josefina, etc.
Nevertheless, as I grew up, I came to like my unusual name, it kind of defines me, it makes me special. In 33 years, I only met one more Josélia! As I feel I am almost unique, I know that my name, as difficult to grab at first listening as he may be, makes me someone also difficult to forget. When someone, somewhere talks about a Josélia, the other person will always know it's me. Nowadays, I would hate it if I was another Paula or Joana in the world, because there are so many.....

My Name is Gay. Not short for another name, not a knickname. When I was born in the 1950's the name Gay mean't, happy and merry. I didn't get made fun of all through school. My children did though. So you can just imagine what they went through. My father said he was sorry for my name before he died. I told him I didn't have any trouble growing up with my name and he was forgiven to ease his mind. My sister's have had fun introducing me through the years. This is my sister Gay. So we all look at the person to see their expression. I do introduce myself to people as my name is Gay. Not by saying I'm Gay.

I have a neighbor names Mocia. She is white, but everyone I talked to asks if she is black. After all the crazy names Hollywood uses, you'd think we would get over ourselves and just let it go.
It's too bad, because there are some really beautiful people out there with names that are not the "norm." But who is to say what is normal.
Everyone has been brought up in different ways with different backgrounds that is where the variety comes from. I think it just makes things and people more interesting.

My name is Princess (no joke). I absolutely HATE it. Eventhough lots of girls tell me they wish their name was princess, i only wish i can have it legally changed. Just recently i heard about this ruling in Australia or someplace; apparently a judge made it illegal for parents to name their children something embarassing. I was sooo angry that this law hadnt been passed 17 yrs ago before i had been born.
It's terrible. I dont like it that ppl assume that im spoiled or super girlie or whatever. Im probably the furthest from a "princess" as any girl can be. It just doesn't suit me. I don't like tiaras or flowy dresses, i like knives and combat boots.
And now whenever i meet new people and they ask for my name, i just tell them to give me a nickname. My middle name is no help either. I feel like a joke. This shame that i live with makes me so sick i could die.

Hey Tyra,
Just so you know my sister an I love your show. I watched the "what's in a name show" and was really touched by what I saw because all my life, I have been stereotyped because of my name (Marquetta). Recently after starting another year of college and meeting yet a new group of people to stereotype me because of my name, I got an assignment for a psychology class and decided that I would like to do an experiment like that one you did on your show. I wanted to know if you could give me a little more information on what you did in this study...or if it's too confidential then I can understand. I would greatly appreciate it if you could help me on this project.
