Katie: I Don't Play Games, But I Do Attend Them
05/29/08 8:02 AM

Well friends, if you've been following my antics over the past few months you've undoubtedly learned that I possess two things:
1. A propensity for finding myself in ridiculous happenstance situations, and
2. Impeccable timing.
Naturally, the two should culminate this week to provide one final insight into the life that is "Katie, that girl with all the hair," So, enjoy...
Saturday night I had pretty much written off LA as a city where I want to live anymore. This was a direct result of my beloved baseball team, the St. Louis Cardinals, coming to town for a three game series with the Dodgers and me not being able to find a single person within a 50-mile radius who wanted to attend game two with me. So I went by myself. Yes. This is how much I love my precious Redbirds. I went to a baseball game, decked in full regalia, solo.
You may find this pathetic... and by the 5th inning, I may have agreed with you. This was notably highlighted by the hair full of peanut shells I was rocking, thanks to the poorly parented group of eight-year-old Dodger fans sitting a few rows behind me. They were not fans of Pujols, the Cardinals' first baseman, and by proxy they were not fans of mine. So I did what any Cards fan would do.... I went and got a freaking beer. This proved to be a fantastic decision, as I was fortunate enough to spot another true Cards fan sporting a truly epic red blazer, also taking a beer break.
Wait a minute....I totally know that guy!
Who runs into a dude they bartended with in college in a city 2,000 miles away in a stadium full of roughly 55,000 people? I do. Cue: ridiculous happenstance. Naturally, he introduced me to his cousin... who I also worked with at a mall in Columbia, MO. And the best part? They revealed that they had traveled to the game on a bus full of 30 PEOPLE I WENT TO COLLEGE WITH - many of whom I either knew personally or recognized my hair. Well, so much for having no friends in LA. But wait, it totally gets better...
For my next trick, I decided to stop into a bar by my apartment after the game, mainly because the bartenders are huge Red Sox fans and I take every opportunity I can to annoy them with my Redbird obsession. But halfway through my reenactment of Ankiel's two-run double in the third, I was apprehended by a man wanting to know if I was, in fact, from St. Louis. Now, it's necessary to note that when I say "man," I mean an incredibly good looking, polite, friendly, artistic, Cardinals loving dude... i.e. EXACTLY my type. Holy best luck ever!
For the next hour or so, we discussed two of my favorite topics: beer and baseball, and how the two never come together more perfectly than when one is in our hometown of St. Louis, Missouri. Yes, he was also from the Lou and had, like me, moved out here to be in a more creative market. And after I used World Series victories to cleverly discern his age, I was smitten.
Apparently, so was he.
We exchanged numbers before heading our separate ways, and sure enough, three days later he called. (Note: I was not aware that the three-day rule was still in effect - THAT is how long I have been out of the game.) That said, without further adieu, I give you the point of this entire blog. Ladies and Gentleman, I am proud to announce that for the first time in over 2 ½ years, I have a date. Tonight. I'll pause here for your applause....
Thank you. Thank you very much.
-Katie
