The Hot Dish on Calories

05/12/08 1:08 PM

Over the last few weeks, the Tyrashow.com team has been scouring our favorite sites, shows and mags to learn about the top items to help you achieve your fitness goals. The photo above is just some of the info I have to weed through for "Target: YOU." Can you say, overwhelming?! With all of these options, it was hard figuring out where to start -- until I came across the BodyGem.

The BodyGem by Microlife USA is a hand held device that measures resting metabolic rate (RMR). RMR is the number of calories your body burns every day, basically doing nothing but laying in bed and sleeping. Regardless of what you eat, you won't lose weight unless you eat fewer calories than you burn. With your measurement you learn how many calories you can eat to maintain or lose weight.

Sounds scientific -- and it is -- but it's easy to use too. BodyGem experts sent clinical nutritionist,
Bari Rooney, Ph.D. to give me the test. I had to breath into the device for six minutes, easy and pain free, then Bari told me my RMR was 1370. This is an important number to know because it will help me individualize my nutrition and exercise plan. I'm no math major, but this is some simple math even I can do -- the more activity I do, the more calories I get to eat!

As for food, Bari's going to offer tips and advice throughout "Target: YOU" in upcoming blogs! If you want to discover your RMR, visit www.microlifeusa.com and click on "gem locator" to find a healthcare practitioner near you.

Happy testing!

hey Tyra
i love your show. i am a fan of yours. shuttling between my home country and USA due to my husband's job made me pack-up about 30 pounds after my marriage, or maybe more (never thought of weighing myself earlier, was so thin). going from 'you need to gain weight' to 'you need to lose weight' has been rapid and is making my life miserable.
i have been trying to eat healthy and exercising since march but have seen minimum results till date. weight was never my problem and overeating is still not my problem. i am not in denial, i actually dont overeat, have no health issues that cause weight gain, but still, here i am. i am hopeful.
at the end, i have a request, can you please have an expert who can give solutions to the problems like that of mine, on your website. i know, i am not the only one who might be thinking, 'how i gained all that weight' and how can i lose it all.
thanx

Dear Tyra.
My name is Candace Moss. I am 17 years old ,and is the your biggest fan in the world i idolize you. My biggest dream is to be on America's next top model when i am old enough.. but for me i know thats never gonna happen ,and this is why oi know that . About a year ago i went to an open casting call for ProScout talent search and out of the 100 or so people that were ther i was one of the 12 pople to get choosen to go to the next part.. but me being totally different from the others i didint have the money to proseed.. and in front of my eyes the only oppiturninty turned into dust and faded away .. i am one out of millions of girls that have what it takes to be a model.. and make it to prove that even growing up on walfare you can still carry out your dreams and help other girls not to give up on yourself..

I wish i had a chance to be on your show to tell you all that I've been through. It would amaze you that im still here breathing and living today..and I'm willing to share it with ,america only if i had the chance to meet you..

i'm sorry to say it here but i don't know how to e-mail you. i am from the philippines and your show is very well loved here. i wish you could invite youtube sensation charice pempengco to sing in your show. she's really good and was also invitd to sing in ellen degeneres show, paul o grady show and a show in korea. i would just eally love to see her there.

This is a very interesting concept. Much more personalized than just checking your heart for a few seconds and subtracting your age - or whatever antiquated way we usually hear about.
Cool, thanks!
