A Medi-Spa, also known as a Medical Spa or Medspa, is a medical practice focused on minimally invasive cosmetic procedures, such as Botox injections, laser treatments, and injectable fillers. The people performing procedures in a Medi-Spa typically operate under the supervision of a licensed practitioner, such as a medical doctor. In general, a Medi-Spa differs from a "spa" by its affiliation with a medical director who has the overall responsibility for the care and safety of the patients.

Beverly Hills plastic surgeon, Dr. Calvert, recommends you consider the following things when choosing a Medi-Spa:

MEDICAL DIRECTOR: Ask if the facility is operating under the license of a medical director. Once you know a medical director is involved, make sure he or she has the appropriate credentials, such as a 4-year medical degree. Remember, the medical director is ultimately the person responsible for the safety and wellbeing of the patients under care in the Medi-Spa facility.

STATE LICENSING: Physicians operating as medical directors will be licensed by the state they are practicing in. Check with the state board of medicine to see if the medical director is licensed in the state where you are planning your procedure.

TRAINING: Verify the credentials and ongoing training of the person performing your procedure. A licensed practitioner should be able to show continued commitment to learning the proper and most up-to-date techniques through training certificates or coursework.

ASK FOR REFERRALS: Talk to your primary care doctor, plastic surgeon, family and friends, or patients you know who have had good Medi-Spa experiences. The best referrals come from trusted sources.

CHECK BUSINESS QUALITY: Find out how long the Medi-Spa has been in business and how long the practitioners have been practicing the procedures in that facility. Facilities that have been in business for some time will likely be around for your continued care and treatment.

CHECK EQUIPMENT QUALITY: If there is medical equipment involved in your procedure, check to ensure it has been inspected and is maintained properly. Make sure you are comfortable with the state of the machine being used to treat you.

INTERNET RESOURCES: The Internet can be a good source to discover information about the procedures you are considering. Once you have the information you need about the procedure, ask your primary care doctor or plastic surgeon to see if they can refer you to a qualified Medi-Spa center in your area.

TREATMENT CHOICES:
The trained practitioners at a quality Medi-Spa will be able to evaluate you and make proper recommendations through a consultation. Ask about consultations when booking your appointment to make sure your Medi Spa can evaluate your condition to make sure you are receiving the proper procedure.

MALPRACTICE COVERAGE: Verify malpractice insurance coverage. It is important to know if the Medi-Spa has made a commitment to patients by carrying some type of malpractice insurance.

MALPRACTICE HISTORY: Malpractice suits can be checked through a number of avenues, but may require that you make a trip to the county courthouse. You can check the malpractice status of any medical doctor serving as the medical director. In most states, this information is available through the Internet.

PRACTITIONER EXPERIENCE: Choose a practitioner who has experience performing the procedure you wish to have. Some practitioners may have more experience using lasers or injectables than others. Knowing the experience level will help you to get the result you desire.

CONTINUING MEDICAL EDUCATION: It is useful to know if the people performing the procedures attend local and national meetings to keep up on the latest technology and techniques. A commitment to on-going education is a sign that the Medi-Spa has qualified, well-informed practitioners to perform the procedures.

ADVERTISING: Advertising has become quite common for Medi-Spas. The market is competitive and advertising is a way to spread the word. However, a large amount of advertising does not necessarily mean anything. The information given through advertising is often limited and can usually not be relied upon to make a solid choice about a Medi-Spa. You must still look at all of the items listed above and make your own judgment.

NEXT: Recovering from An Eating Disorder

Hello! Wow, today's show just floored me! I would like to give my sympathy to the ladies on the show today; they are very brave. Even tho their decisions were...let's just say it...stupid, it's still very sad. I would also like to add that I currently work at a aesthetic medicine practice or 'medispa' out of tampa and our office has been very blessed w/not having any mishaps like this. The most important thing is to ASK QUESTIONS when you go in for a consultation...don't feel bad or noisy! I can't stress enough and continue to stress in my consults all the complications that can occur and I, myself ask questions to understand the patient's expectations and to find out if there is something their not telling me (this does happen)...I don't understand that?!?!? One of the biggest misktakes I've seen is people are so caught up in 'how much the treatment is', or what kind of deal they can get...that they would rather go somewhere else, pay less and receive a horrible treatment! At our practice, we're all trained and experienced in the treatments we offer (we even do the treatments on ourselves, our medical director is a medical doctor and she's always there, doing many of the treatments, herself! If we feel you're not a good candidate, we'll tell you b/c it's not about 'making a buck'! Understand? Any other qualified, professional practice will do the same. Do your research ladies or gentlemen, please! I'm glad the show touched base on this but hopefully the tyra show will also show the positive side of going to a medispa, because their are procedures that work and people who do know what they're doing and who love doing it too!

hi, i just watched your show today on plastic surgery and i live in new york and also had a tummy tuck like your first guest. i had my surgery in jan of 2004 and my incision also opened up and kept opening up and my whole stomach was exposed for 7 months, i had a bad infection and then had to have the surgery redone 1 year later by a new surgeon, i had the surgery done in new york, and i am trying to pursue legal action and i am having a hard time doing so. till this day i still am in pain, i have swelling and my life has changed so much, i have two children that sometimes i cannot even take care of. i just wanted to write and let you know about my story. and also that i did do my homework and picked a well known plastic surgeons office to do the surgery. thanks jennifer

My best friend watched the show today and told me all about it. This is the advice I wish I had last year. I went to a spa and left with 1st and 2nd degree burns on my face after a facial because of a reaction that occurred. I am now healing and hopefully the topical solutions and treatments will rectify the situation but I will always be traumatized by the experience. It's these type of events that noone think are possible. I am glad someone who has the reach of Tyra chose to highlight these experiences.

Hello Tyra! Just wanted to comment on your show today. Yes, the major plastic surgery disasters were very eye opening, but it's not everyone that is into that kind of thing. The most shockin for me was the poor women that had the eating flesh disorder from the pedicures. I've been Diabetic since I was 13 yrs old & I have to be very careful with things like this. Thank you!

I liked the topic you picked today for your show today. I just don't understand why people go to a foreign country for surgery & come back mentally & physically scared for life! I think people should do homework prior to the surgery, not just go to a website & say yeah, this one sounds good. You are absolutely right about that little voice in your head. That voice can be very powerful with decisions like these. I also wanted to say thank-you for being yourself. You make us realy proud to have you as a beautiful role-model:)

Tyra I want to warn people about a plastic surgeon in Little Rock, AR 72205. I moved here some ten years ago and busted one of my implants. I thought It would be best to go to a near by plastic surgeons instead of going back to Dallas,Texas to my original surgeon, who I must say is the best in the world. This doctor said he could replace my implants and went on to show me his receptionist's breast. I admit they were very nice looking so on that note I had him do the surgery. I was very upset needless to say. One of my breasst was looking up and the other looking down and to the side.He kept telling me they will straighten up and don't worry. Well they did not.So now we had to do it over at another large price. I cant believe I had to pay again with his messed up job. A friend also went to him for a breast reduction. Again he messed it up and she was so upset and did nothing. I just don't understand how they can get away with this. My breasts are uneven and when I lean over they look like hanging water balloons.I am self conscoius of my breasts now. I cant afford to go back and have them redone. I feel for the women out there that have gone through all of this just to feel better about themselves and then come out of It only to feel worse. I pray that these surgeons will never be able to hurt another person again. Thanks for hearing me out on this subject. THANKS AGAIN. HELLEN

I agree wholeheartedly with a previous poster re: TJ surgeries and the way that they have been presented on tv, y'all even sneered when you said "Tijuana" (gasp!the horror!!) come on now... There are good doctors there and everywhere, its a matter of doing the homework, which is the patient's responsibility. The example you had on was a sad one, but other than scare folks, what did that accomplish? Why not put on someone from a Mexican artist type surgeon as a contrast, then change the focus of the show to a proactive one. Teach folks how to tell the difference, to find the right doctor, check out his references etc, give them links to databases with credential records to check out the docs, or with complaints from other patients, or tell them how to check out the plastic surgery standards in the country of interest...that would have been helpful. No matter who you see, what they say, when you see them face to face, who they've done surgery on, or what it costs, you are taking a risk and not guaranteed anything, nothing, nada. You could pay $50,000 and get maimed. Further, talking to the doctor in person is no more informative than talking to him/her on the phone. In fact, many would find the anonymity of email or IM a liberating medium, in that you are not too intimidated to ask tough questions, or challenge what you are told. Most people, women in particular, often have a hard time with confrontations with authority figures like doctors. Too many of us are no match for them face to face. How do you argue or see through a repeated face to face promise to make you beautiful? It's hard to ask questions that may offend someone. People seem to think

Okay, before I start to rant and rave please understand that I've had work done on myself recently. I have no sympathy for the ladies on today show. Before you make any life altering decisions about your body you have to do you research. The ladies were looking for the easy and cheap way out!!! The sob stories are going through one ear and out the other because to me the're stupid. You have to do research on many doctors before choosing one. If they can't afford to do the surgery then it's not for them. I'm sorry but I don't have any sympathy for these ladies because we hear so many cases where people die because they are trying to do it cheap. So, sorry ladies you gets no love from me!!!

Hi Tyra, I love you!!! The show is awesome!!! I would like to say that in the past three shows there have been a lot of hurting people and it breaks my heart. When are we as people going to stop HATING eachother and ourselves? Life is so short. When you are unhappy with the way that you look and hate yourself for it, I think that it is time for a mental make-over not a body make-over. When our minds and heart are healthy our bodies will be healthy too. Life is such a wonderful gift and it has so much to offer. If we could focus on our families and friends and helping others we wouldn't have time to obsess over the things that other people don't even notice about us. EVERYONE is BEAUTIFUL and SPECIAL!!!

I went to a tanning salon for the first time before my wedding a few years ago. I bought a package of three sessions. At my second visit, I went in a stronger bed. I could feel my butt burning near the end of my session. The girl had me in there for 20 minutes. As I was getting dressed, I saw on the bed that the recommened time is just five minutes!!! Another thing that happened at this place was that I got pink eye! I asked to buy goggles. They told me that they offer compliemntary goggles that they sanitize after every visit. Well, not only was I burnt & peeling, but I had pink eye before my wedding! Luckily, the pink eye cleared up & a make-up artist was able to put make-up over the peeling skin to make it look uniform. So, ladies, wear your own goggles if you go tanning & don't stay in too long. I, for one, will never go back to a tanning salon after that unless I get a spray tan.

Oh wow, the show today was very eye-opening! I am writing an email to all my close girlfriends, and I was wondering if perhaps you could post some pictures of the disfigurements of the women featured on this morning's episode. I would like to be able to show my girlfriends what a possible outcome could look like. Thank you! And I am a new fan of the show, I absolutely love it!

Tyra, About 6 years ago I weighed 250pds I was having alot of health issues so the doctor recommended a gastric bypass. I had this done and it was successful. The one thing the doctor didn't inform me of was all of the excess skin that I would be left with. I exercised everyday and have for the past 6 years but the skin will not go away. I feel so horrible about the way I look that I don't want my husband looking at me. I want to have a breast reduction and a tummy tuck but after watching your show I am really scared. How do I find out about the surgeons in my area and their success rate. I know it is hard to answer all of the questons posted to you buy if you could provide a link that would be great. You are the greatest. I learn something from every show you aire. Thanks for your compassion. ~~P~~~:)

I went to a nail shop about 4 years ago to have a pedicure. Everything seemed normal until a few days later my feet began to itch, and itch, and itch. So i didn't think anything of it i just kept lotioning them thinking that my skin was just dry. Then i noticed that they started peeling a little and then a lot , until all of my skin was peeling off my feet. So i made an appt. to see a podiatrist and was diagnosed with having a foot fungus. I was given medicine which did absolutley nothing. After repeated visits the podiatrist acted as if there was really nothing they could do, my skin still continues to peel to this day if i am not constantly lotioning my feet they look very scaly and dry, I get so angry because of a pedicure I have bad feet now, and I just dont know what to do about it im just living with and it is a complete disaster to me I really need help, and urge for women to stop just going to anyone with a chair and a nice foot spa, really check these people out because it really could be a life changing experience.

Me and 2 of my friends worked (recently left) at a medical spa here in Corpus Christi TX While there we witnessed many beauty disasters. The medical spa offers the fraxel treatment, IPL, Laser Hair Removal, mesotherapy, liposuction, Blepharoplasty (removal of tissue under or above the eye to reduce puffiness), Contour thread lifts, thermage, sclerotherapy, restylane, botox and many other cosmetic procedures. All performed by a General Surgeon, not a plastic surgeon. First off, this doctor offers these services in his clinic, none of them are performed in a hospital, not even liposuction!!! This is a huge red flag!! We recently found out that the dr. was disposing of the lipo fat via the sink in his procedure room (making the office smell like rotting flesh for 3 days after the procedure!!! The Dr.’s wife blamed it on the upscale restaurant next door!!!!) also I witnessed on several occasions the dr. doing sclerotherapy on clients without wearing gloves, while the clients bleed all over the table. Mesotherapy is an injection that helps dissolve and redistribute fat throughout the body. This may sound like a miracle treatment but according to a plastic surgeon in our area the mixture of medicine that he is using for mesotherapy has not been approved for this specific use by the FDA. We had a client come in for mesotherapy almost a year ago. Recently she came in for hair removal and told us that the back of one of her legs was still numb and bruised (after about 8 months)!!!! Numbness is not a normal side effect and bruises should disappear within 2 weeks. We have had many clients complain of large brown patches on their faces after receiving fraxel treatments, which resurface the skin with a laser. The Dr. and his wife recommend chemical

what the hell is wrong with this lady...is she just a moron. I think if she has all these facts and still goes and does this than she deserves what is gonna happen to her. What an idiot. Some people will just never learn
